FX30 seems like a great camera for filmmakers who are going to set up shots and do their own lighting. For run and gun weddings, I agree that the 12 MP Full Frame is going to be tough to beat. I filmed weddings on the A7sII and A7iii for years with few issues and effectively no grain issues.

I am mainly a filmmaker. I think I've taken 5 maybe 10 pictures with my A7iv. The FX30 is more fitting to my needs. So, I'm selling my A7iv for the FX30. A couple more reasons why are 1) the timecode output. Which is very important for filmmaking. 2) Recording externally in 16-bit RAW video. Which is good for visual effects. Having worked on over 40 feature films as a visual effects artist, I will take advantage of the 16-bit output on many occasions.

Remember when you calculate AF points the FX30 are spread across a smaller area, so its not necessarily going to worse the A7S3

Nice job! A7siii with 16-35 PZ for real estate/architectural videos, light setup with great low light performance. Just picked up the FX30 as a 2nd camera with the 20-70 PZ, this will be used for outdoors, details and longer views...also a 2nd camera for interviews....and for stills it's the Nikon gear...Kinda like to keep video cameras and photo cameras separate. Coming from a Z6 to the A7siii, had a chance to video the same home I shot with the Z6, which had challenging light, the difference in richness of color and lower noise is noticeable.

I find the FX30 highly interesting. Unfortunately, it's not that easy to create nice crops with the APS-C. F2.8 is then translated to F4.2, too bad. Regards

i APPRECIATE THIS TIME here, never heard of the fx line, but been running two 7s iii's with no issues. always great to hear a well put together comparison my friend.

Using full frame is like sleeping on a bed.
Going apsc from full frame is like sleeping on the floor.
Why would anyone want to sleep on the floor?
Sensor size > any fx30 features you can throw at it

I almost ordered one because of the hype but I’ll stick with A7siii and 7IV. My plan was to sell both and use FX30 but the stills mode is a little lacking. Yes I know it’s a video camera first but hey ho! Looks great though. I would miss EVF though as I do sometimes use it for video with longer lenses.

I wish they'd add timecode support for the A7Siii. It has the same internals as the FX3 so I'm sure it can do it, Sony is just choosing not to. I've got my FX30 on preorder as well - can't wait!!

The way I look at it, you get the FX3 with the A7S III, but the FX30 will match much better with A7 IV or A7C II, which are sharper and in APS-C mode are about 24MP. The rolling shutter will probably be fine, you will just have to use a wider lens and correct the rolling shutter in post with Catalyst Browse.

the crop at 120 and lowlight is only reason imma stick with the s3. only got annoyed when you kept saying s3 is hybrid. but in reality you are right. maybe back in the day the s line meant more cinema but that is only in relation to the other a7 group (a7_, a7s_, a7r_). and i also understand in this context the fx30 is definitely more video focused. if it wasn't for lowlight capabilities and 4k120 crop the fx30 at 1/2 cost is definitely the better buy (IMO), cause you can buy 2 of them to run whatever you want, would be perfect for podcast and streaming budgets. active cooling is major also. and being cropped you just buy a sigma lens 3 pack and you ready to go to be honest, and you have access to that creamy f1.4 goodness for the low. I think in the near future i will get it simply for the fact that 2 full frame lenses right now gonna run me basically the cost of the fx30, while i have multiple crop lenses available that arent being used currently. sigma 16, 30 and a few more. i want to see how well the pancake kti lens runs on the fx30. the 16-35 if i remember right. that would be a crazy run n gun setup. arguably fit in a pocket.

you are right about the slow motion . I would also use the FX30 as a B camera for this purpose

Yes! I'm a Filmmaker x Photographer and like to keep my gear separated. I shoot stills on the Sony A7Rii and that's been a beast for me so long as I don't shoot in dark environments. But I am pushing heavily onto the video content side of things next year and the FX30 looks to be the best bang for the buck. As you said, it's that entry level for cinema cameras and for 2K body only, I'll make a hell of an ROA from it.

I'm currently using the a7iv as my main camera, I'm thinking of getting the fx30 as a secondary camera, and maybe it could be my main video camera when not in low light situations

Im boxing my FX30 up and sending it off for sale and purchasing a A7S3 The noise on the FX30 is horrific even in well lit situations the amount of steps that have to be checked to produce decent quality is not with the price tag I only purchased for 4k 120fps for certain shoots but its practically impossible. The time and energy and anticlimactic end footage this camera produces reminds me of 1990's home video footage AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!

Man, I've watched so many of your videos and your take on things and the work going into these videos is insane. Whenever I see you have a video on something I'm looking for I always click it. Really appreciate your perspective on things. Thanks for all your hard work!

Dors that 2000$ gap justify the low light performance of the a7siii ? Il really curious if there is really that much of a difference
