It never occurred to me this was a part of American culture. It was always just a song little kids sang.

When I was a young child, I would sing this to myself all the time. No clue where I first heard it and I never even thought about how its a labor song, I just liked trains

My Grandmother passed away recently. She and my Grandfather always loved this song. The day before she passed I sat with her and played this video, she couldn’t say much at that point, but I think she enjoyed listening to it. Thanks for posting

Encapsulates the American spirit so greatly; pride in hardwork and getting your boots dirty.

When I hear these old songs I think of my great great great grandfather who was born in 1869 and died in 1969 my dad got to talk with him when he would stay with him in the summer . He was born in Ohio and grew up a farmer and when old enough he went out to work on the railroad and did that till he was 55 he made enough money to buy land after retirement and to become a farmer again.

Back when this country loved trains and the spirit of industrial life. Wish we could love trains like we did then now

As a train guy myself, I feel this part of American culture has been unfairly overshadowed by our newer carcentric and car-crazy antics. That’s why I embrace what we’ve preserved in our railroad history and what we can bring back of it in the future.

Great song. A great grand father was career MOW - started on UP in Kansas in 1870s; retired 1930 as a branch boss on the Pennsy.
