Here's Why Hybrid, Electric Pickups Could Kill Coal Rolling Forever

Over the last decade, Diesel-powered vehicles have become less welcome around the world. That is, with the exception of Diesel powered trucks, which are still, to this day, fairly popular.

But that's about to change. And as Ford has just announced its intention to stop producing the Ford F150 PowerStroke due to low sales, we're wondering if Hybrid and Electric pickup trucks could actually kill Diesel - and the coal rolling that comes with it - forever?

Cannot wait to replace my venerated 2001 F250 7.3L diesel and 1976 W300 400 CID big block gasser 4wd dually with my ordered Tri-Motor CT. The CT is slated to be the last truck I will ever buy. Yes it is all about power. The power to haul cars on my 10k car trailer. Finally EV's are coming out that can do work when needed.

There should be a law requiring Diesel's to have the exhaust pipe at the front of the car.

What always surprised me about Toyota, is that Toyata didn't make a Tacoma Hybrid 10 years ago. I would have bought it. Then Ford beats Toyota to a hybrid pickup. Too late now, I have a 3 motor CT on order.

simple solution: anyone caught rollong coal should be sentenced to spending one hour with their car chucking out black smoke in an enclosed room. If they survive, torch the car.

I agree that on "Short Haul" PU's electric is great, but when pulling a load with a GVW of 20, 000+ pounds.... Until you can make charging as rapid as fulling a Diesel. Long haulers won't switch, I can pull (with my Ram 3500D) over 1, 000 miles with my fuel on board (plus the 90 gallon) tank in the bed. My GVW is just over 23K

I have a 2007 Ram 1500 that is rusting away but has served me well in carrying 6 people and a loaded truck bed across the US. I have a CyberTruck on order and can't wait for the production start.

Coal rollers are likely to be offended by use of logic and would much rather take pride in being a'holes even if that doesn't help them.
I would suggest that all diesels and 4x4s should be classified as agricultural vehicles and consequently be restricted to rural roads.

When EV pickups and EV semi trucks start hitting the streets in large numbers in a few years, it's goodbye diesel, goodbye ICE.

Got an idea! If a coal roller is found, the non catalytic converter exhaust system must be re-routed via the vehicles cabin a/c unit and the filter be removed from it too. Windows made inoperative & this would stop them pretty quick one would think…..however with no brain in their heads to affect, maybe not?🤣😂

Coal Rolling, or its equivalent, has been illegal in the UK since the Locomotive Act of 1861.

Every Locomotive propelled by Steam or any other than Animal Power to be used on any Turnpike Road or public Highway shall be constructed on the Principle of consuming and so as to consume its own Smoke ; and any Person using any Locomotive not so consuming its own Smoke shall, on Conviction thereof before any Two of Her Majesty's Justices of the Peace, forfeit any Sum not exceeding Five Pounds for every Day during which such Locomotive shall be used on any such Turnpike Road or public Highway.

More up to date laws would get the vehicle stopped and banned from the roads. It's a 'stop on sight' offence for traffic patrols.

The coal roll truck @ 2:30 is from Thailand and a very common sight here. Imported EVs are taxed up to 80% of the sales price. Tried to buy an EV 2 years ago and was told that I had to upgrade my grid connection to 60A before a home charger could be installed, even though I am off-grid solar for 9 months of the year. Just bought a PHEV and had the same fight "solar not enough power" "voltage from solar unstable will damage wall charger" Had to prove that pure sine wave solar inverters produce a much cleaner current than the grid. Wall charger installed - no warranty given. Solar powering the house and charging the PHEV no problems.

Great job Nikki, IMHO this is one of your best videos in quite some time.

I lived in Wyoming for 8 years. I was impressed by the power of the sun and wind, and always wanted a greener energy system. It should be a selling point for Cowboys that they can drive and charge without giving money to Dick Cheney.

I think I out underestimate the stubbornness of American truck owners! But much❤️ anyway.

Electric will not replace diesel for towing any distance until batteries have much higher energy density. Until then I'll keep my diesel SUV making about 650 ftlbs for my towing needs, while still getting good mileage and range. Yes, it has been modified by the PO because the first gen DPF systems were pretty much crap and failed quickly. So when I have to punch it, yes it does emit some smoke but nothing like doing it on purpose which is stupid.

However, I would like a long flatbed electric pickup for a camper top, since it doesn't have to tow and having a huge built-in battery for a camper is a big plus.

My Duramax is tuned to be more efficient, not less efficient. If I could have gotten a hybrid in 2002 I would have gladly. I shouldn’t have gotten a diesel, but I previously had, and liked, a pair of diesels. I actually used them to haul boats @ least once a month from coast to coast and up and down the California Coast. My GMC4X4 is a lot more like a car than my previous Dodge Ram/Cummins. But my wife is a lot more likely to drive the GM than one of the Rams. Thanks for the videos.

Being a power generation engineer for a diesel engine mfg I hope over time you are correct. There are some technologies in the works in Arizona and California that may help the transition. Utilities still produce over 50% of their electricity using fossil fuel and it will take many years to convert to nuclear in the USA. Most of the coal plants that shut down in the last ten years were simply replaced by fossil fuel natural gas plants. In the meantime it may make sense to look at lowering NOx using diesel engines like Achates Power or producing solid-state hydrogen from the sun versus PEM which uses utility electricity.
Hopefully, some other country like India in the next five years is successful in producing safe molten salt Thorium reactors and we adopted this technology in the USA.

I’m looking forward to the lightning, I need a pickup for work. I don’t need the $300 a week in fuel.

I LOVE the open cargo bay of the classic pickup truck. It's so easy to throw anything in to be moved. My worn out back loves it too. I DON'T love pollution. If I had money, I'd be all in for the Cybertruck.
