After a Picture
Sink, thou bright beaming god, the plains are thirsting
For refreshing dew; and man doth languish.
Lo! Thy steeds are panting,
Phoebus! Descend to the sea!
See, who, on the sea’s deep crystal wave up-borne,
With smiles entreats thee! Does thy heart know her?
Faster the steeds now bear thee:
Thetis, the gooddess entreats.
From his ear, to her loving arms extended,
Springs the driver. The reins he casts to Cupid.
Quiet the steeds now are standing,
Drinking the cool crystal wave.
O’er the heav’ns now, her sable wings unfolding,
Hovers silent soft night; and in her train, see
Love comes. Rest all ye lovers!
Phoebus, the lover now rests.
