Wait does this mean we are best friends?

I'd wager the reason they don't offer a prebuilt at all is the RFI/EMI testing requirement for electronics sold in the US, which does _not_ apply to kit components. Last time I checked it costs a _minimum_ of about $150, 000 to get a consumer-electronic product certified for sale in the US.

My brother and I absolutely had link cables. I bought Red Version, he bought Blue Version. We went in together on Yellow with birthday money. 90s childhood had some real perks at times.

Love to see Russ be shouted out by LTT. What a crossover.

The terrible standby battery life may be because the FPGA isn't being shutdown or put into sleep mode. FPGAs generally draw several times the power of custom silicon (though this FPGA would naturally be on a more modern process).

The cover you found on the speaker connector is from the assembly. A pick and place machine needs a flat surface.

I've still got and cherish my Gameboy Colour and Gameboy Advance SP.

The Advance SP is actually still shockingly usable (not great ergonomics but very small and light plus has a backlit screen). It was also the ultimate "hide under the sheets" device thanks to both the button to toggle the screen light on/off and the tiny size it folded into. I got caught reading books under the cover a couple of times growing up, but never got caught with the GBA SP.

The small size, light weight, decent capacity battery, backlit colour screen and backwards compatibility with GB and GBC cartridges made it the ultimate Gameboy and still one of the all time best gaming handhelds.

ah the reflective color screen, where you'd fight forever for the exact right angle of light to see the game, but not get glare, the 'gamers twilight' as you will, that after an hour or so would have to change drastically.

I have mine for 7 months or so now and I love it. The screen is miles ahead of the OG + USB-C is great. Lack of IR is a non-issue.

Dumping GB/A carts to a memory card to keep your saves is the best part. Who knows when those old batteries will give out after this long.

Just did this myself. But used my original GBC motherboard, new case, buttons and OLED screen. Turned out great and looks like new. Took a little longer to assemble, but I like having the original motherboard.

Wait…link-cables were rare??? Almost everyone i knew had one.

I upgraded my OG gameboy color about 1, 5 years ago with a new backlit lcd display. Huge difference.

Just bought a Gameboy Color that had a Mario Land game at a flea market today for $5. It's weird not having a backlight.

Linus never knew anyone that used a link cable!? I'm sorry I can't get over that, I'm hard pressed to remember anyone that owned a Gameboy and didn't use it occasionally. It was a core part of the Pokémon experience and I remember playing multiplayer Tetris that way.

I also missed out on Nintendo handhelds during childhood. And now, during adulthood, I've developed an appreciation for classic games. So much so that now I own every Nintendo handheld console, of course, upgraded with better displays and such. I feel a lot of people have gone retro recently, or maybe it's just me joining the retro community that allowed me to recognize those people.

Hey, any mention of Retro Game Corps makes the whole video worthwhile

to anyone interested, the link cable can also be used for connecting to an arduino boy and sending and receiving midi for making music
