Obama's pivot to Asia: A success or failure?

It has been almost eight years since Barack Obama was elected as the 44th President of the United States. He will be remembered for his leadership both in America and abroad. Most recently, Obama sought to recalibrate his foreign policy to Asia. He promised the US would play a leadership role in Asia for decades to come. But one of America's most important allies in the region, the Philippines, has recently distanced itself from Washington, and strengthened ties with neighboring Asian powers. And an increased US navy presence has only raised military tensions in the South China Sea. Is his policy of "Pivot to Asia" threatening to backfire? We speak with former US ambassador Stapleton Roy for his thoughts on Obama's diplomatic legacy.

Asia doesn't necessary need the U.S in the region. The trade and relationship can be built among South East Asia and other regional Asian continent among our selves.

Mr.Roy has a very good point: don't talk about leadership in Asia; however, Mr.Obama has been constantly talking about leadership in Asia ! One example, on the issue of TPP vs. RECP, Mr.Obama openly stated that should allow China to write the trade rules...and now TPP is on the edge of being abandoned, the U.S is suffering a major credit crisis in Asia. A benign competition is good for both China and U.S, it makes both sides stay alert and competitive; however, the U.S apparently adopted a very childish policy to stir China's relationships with its neighbor by stepping into the SCS issues too much in the hope that once the ASEAN countries are at foe against China will then embrace the U.S. Such a cold-war thinking style does not belong to the 21st century and that's why Pivot to Asia is deemed to lose.

America still has a long way to go when it comes to racism and foreign people of different culture and heritage. I wouldn't get too soft of this old White man opinion as he is only a few less to see such foreign difference and fear of another human being.
