This was known shortly after the fire, the reason for the cladding, was that it looked nicer, and the fire resistant cladding looked "ugly" apparently. It was a building that housed a lot if low income tentats. Don't be fooled, the neglect is not accidental, there were rich people who hated the building and what it represented.

There's more, the building company used cheapear materials and the cladding was proven to be flammable. The smoke alarms didn't work neither did the sprinklers. Everyone was told it wouldn't spread between levels so to stay put. It was the middle of the night so some people just never woke up. And there are still hundreds of tower blocks around the country that use the same cladding and have been promised since then that it will be replaced soon, they can't sell as no-one will move into it and they have to pay extra for fire wardens to patrol so they're out of money, unable to move and living in constant fear!

The worst part is that the local council knew the cladding was a fire hazard and were warned multiple times to replace it immediately.

The saddest part is that few months ago happens that same in Valencia, Spain, and the firefighters told the people do the same that in that tower.
The fire almost killed a firefighter and people were concerned about that could happen in their building.

Some more detailed info:

The cladding and insulation companies were found to have knowingly lied about their product on installation

The authorities at the time failed to pick up on the above

The landlord company had caused its relationship with tenants to deteriorate massively

The government failed to improve fire safety standards through regulation or action after a similar but less deadly incident a few years back

On the whole it was mainly gross negligence that caused this disaster

Not to mention; the inquiry states that the manufacturers of the cladding misled the public and purposely withdrew the fire hazard information despite knowing that the material would be dangerous in case of a fire. The local council, other authorities, and the wider Government also did nothing to regulate and stop the use of cladding, even as residents began to complain.

We knew it was preventable the whole time. The investigation was about who could've prevented it.

To clear some things up it wasnt just the cladding that made the fire so awful. In the cavity between the cladding and the metal structure there is meant to be fire proofing blocks (literally designed to slow down fires like this). These blocks were not installed on buildings as it wasnt seen as mandatory… god knows why. Now it is mandatory especially of masonry supports.

cladding rhymes with adding, not raiding. Or simply put, cladding is the noun associated with the verb clad, which rhymes with glad, not glade.

Grenfell tower lead to a new law being passed here in Scotland. You are now required to have wireless smoke and heat alarms fitted in your house.
