I passed my test because of a situation with an ambulance, many decades ago. I pulled in at a lay-by on a single lane road coming to a roundabout, as I saw him behind coming at speed. Instructor said as we started again, I’ve seen enough, you know what you’re doing and went back. Different times.

Excellent work by the cammer there and I find holding back early is easiest for all as it shows intent and allows the blue lights to flow, it looks like the next road would be difficult to allow such quick flow for the ambulance

Just watch out for any MGIF’s behind that will try to disrupt the emergency flow and barge / block the road

I would argue it was needed. Giving themselves the time to correctly assess the situation was the order of the day and they nailed it. Bravo.

I was traveling along a national speed road heading to forfar, noticed the blue lights behind way back in the distance, but i knew a windy section with solid white lines was approaching, but after that section, big long straight, so i maintained my speed, then as i got on the straight, nothing was coming towards me so set cruise control to 30 and indicated left when ambulance was close enough to start thinking of an overtake (the closes the gap through the windy section). It went smoothly then i got back up to speed.
Its great when you have the space and time to plan for it and everyone else is paying attention too.

There is another connotation of "must get behind" - and these are the folk who see an ambulance and hang off its rear bumper, safe in their misguided belief that the ambulance will "sail" unhindered through red lights and road junctions, and therefore they tuck in close behind and follow through.

Sometimes it's anxious relatives, wanting to keep close to the ambulance, but very often it's a self entitled individual just taking advantage of the situation.

Ambulance crews will always warn a relative not to try keeping up with the ambulance, and point out the consequences if they do.

Great video. I've encountered various situations whereby the principle of "Wasn't needed but could have been" certainly applied.

Did exactly this on Wednesday! In my case it was a large roundabout with lights and roadworks (the Black Cat on the A1), so I was already on the roundabout when the ambulance joined. Rather than block any of the exits, the best option was to pull over and stop between exits. The ambulance passed me without delay and then took the exit that I was due to take. Since that road also had a low speed limit and only a single lane due to the roadworks, the ambulance was able to make much better progress with me behind than if I had been in front. 😊

It's a good way of avoiding having to allow them to pass in a few seconds. It's a way of planning ahead.

No way, that's stadhampton, Oxfordshire, the reason that ambulance went left there is because it's going back to the JR hospital, I doubt it would really be going right because it would've taken that route from the JR beforehand at this roundabout

Few days ago I was sat at the front of a queue, waiting for traffic lights at a loooong stretch of roadworks.
Lights go green, I look in my mirror and see an ambulance approaching with lights and sirens... so I wait for it to clear the queue and get through the roadworks first.
After about 5 seconds, the driver of the BMW X5 behind me gets bored and moves out to pass me, right in front of the ambulance that's passing the queue of waiting cars.

X5 driver then decides to abide by the speed limit through the roadworks and proceeds to trundle along for a mile and a half at 10mph with the ambulance right behind.

To be fair, there were around 30-odd cars in the queue and 29 of the drivers obviously saw the ambulance and were waiting for it to pass but, y'know, there's always one...

The other day was at a very big roundabout with traffic lights. Could hear a siren, the guy in the lane next to me started to go when we got a green, then stopping the guy behind started using his horn, then the ambulance races past. At least he waved his arm as an apology.

well done to your viewer. stopped in such a way that no matter where the ambulance needed to go, they were out of the way.

I only recently realised ( difficult to see, really ) that emergency vehicles use indicatiors more than BmWs, so if looking hard, you can often see which exit on the motorway they are aiming at .
Except police, I think , they are usually not the best drivers. Many cannot use lights and indicators and often i see them looking very lost. Must be all those extra shifts they are covering in an unfamiliar town , covering for colleagues " off sick". 😅

I did this nearly 9 yrs ago, & got tail ended by the driver behind who was enthralled by the flashing lights. Be understandable if I were in a small car, but nope, they didn’t See that 18tonner easing up to a gentle stop…

Living close to a hospital i often do this on my bicycle, problem is the motorists often don't hear the siren so beep or overtake me only to meet the ambulance just over the bridge or around the bend.

Poor from the Audi Q3, just bumbling through the mini roundabout when there's an Ambulance with blue lights on barrelling towards it.

And if you're already on a roundabout and a 🚑 🚒 🚓 (take your pick) behind you is going in the same direction... just stay on the roundabout and do an extra lap of it.

Simple logic. You get held up for seconds, but avoid a potentially difficult overtake by the ESV. Wasn't needed? So what? It didn't hurt anyone, did it?

Exactly how I approach this scenario. Better to wait 5 seconds than have to do an awkward lane change or pull-over immediately after a busy junction

About 26 years ago I genuinely failed my driving test for doing something very similar to this.

Examiner said I was “holding up the flow of traffic”.

That old berk is probably dead by now.
