I like these pagan songs.. set in the late dark ages as Christianity is taking root in northern Europe but not without struggle from the old religions.. the tale pf Tam Lin has a similar narrative of a Christian having to choose between the two worlds..

yes there are a few versions of this song which was adapted towards both christians and the pagans throughout the dark age. Its like in Skyrim, the bard changes their lyrics when on the different territories. Give those bards a break people. They gotta eat too. They cant just be asking people to toss their coins to the witcher.

Herr Mannelig was performed by the German band "In Extremo" too in 99, and featured in the also German RPG "Gothic" by which it gained popularity. The video game from 2001 kinda upholds cult status. Uploads of their version of the song are often filled with game quotes still. I enjoy them both, this has nicer vocals the other bagpipes!

I love this song so much. It's so powerful and deep, even though it speaks of simple things. Those things are powerful because of what they represent to the characters in the story.
I would LOVE to hear more works from the woman singing it.

When Scandinavia became Christian, the Christians changed the original lyrics. "Kristelig qvinna/Christian woman" was "ungmö/maiden" before.

There's so many different versions of this folk song, but this is one of the best at portraying it as a tale of temptation and seduction, which is how it should be listened to ;)

Once led to believe it was a song of unrequited love between a Norse woman and a Christian priest, with this translation it seems she is actually a troll with an enormous dowry trapped until she can convince a suitor to take her as his bride...totally sounds like Grendel....

For a lot of time, I didn't understand that part, when she sings: You are the worst spawn of Necken and the devil. Like, what the heck is Necken? But recently, I had a theory: There is a Norse folklore creature, called Nøkken. I recently stumbled upon a writing that says different synonimes to this creature's name. One of them is Neck. So this can be our Necken, wich is the Nøkken secretly.

Great song and great lyrics! The English translation though, is not so good. For example: "Om i viljen eller ej" is translated into "Will you do so or no"... Not good! A better translation would be: "If you wish to or not", which is both more correct and sounds better too.
