The truth about Epoxy Countertops - Don’t Do It! #shorts

Hello and welcome to my channel. My name is Snowenne and I create fun, motivating cleaning videos.

Today I wanted to show you my epoxy counters in my kitchen. I am so disappointed in them and more disappointed in the person who did them. First off, I had repeatedly asked him if the epoxy would yellow. After many times ignoring me he finally said no. So we proceeded with a light countertop. Within the first month we had a bread package sitting on the counter and the whole bad transferred onto the counters (luckily after a few weeks it did vanish and disappeared. We were told no heat but nothing about how easily it stained. There are millions of tiny scratches all over (couldn’t get my camera to pick them up) and they just look awful now and it’s not even been a year. If you are looking to do epoxy countertops do NOT go with a light color. You will just be upset in 6 months

I did mine myself using stone coat countertops epoxy. They are three years old and still fantastic!

Looks like the so called professionals used a really cheap epoxy. I recommend atleast a marine grade epoxy. You don't see white boats turning yellow in 3 months.

Another stone coat user. Same here. Been three years. No yellowing

Have used both Stone Coat and Leggari epoxies on counters, backsplashes and in shower stalls - properly finished with the right top coat- will NOT yellow.

A few pointers. Not all epoxies are created equal. Yes, they will all yellow to a certain degree, when doing white. However, there are white counter tops I did over 3 years ago with stonecoat products that look wonderful today.. To avoid scratch Hong and staining, use stonecoatcountertops ultimate topcoat.

That’s why you never choose the cheapest contractor. You want a polyaspartic and it wouldn’t have yellowed regardless of color

Yup! I did mine 5 years ago. Entire kitchen counters and a whole wall in my family room. Came out AWESOME! Until 1.5 years later they turned yellow! My kitchen counters don’t even see sunlight!

Stone coat countertops, art coat for light, white or clear that you don't want to yellow out over time. The art coat is designed specifically for that and a clear epoxy top coat is almost a necessity for countertops to take abuse so the top can be sanded and polished if damaged. You could pour red wine on it and it never stain!

Decent poly urethane topcoat, will stop staining and it a sand and apply

Stone coat is really the best option for anti yellowing. It’s sucks that you have to deal with that, they looked very nice.

i was told you can't use oil based paint (or Spray paint) under the epoxy, could this have caused contamination

I don't care what anyone says, all epoxies will yellow to see degree over time, depending on the lightness of it and how much sun the area gets. I do epoxy counter tops, this is why I tell customers with a very sun light kitchen, to not have a light color. ^ months seems a bit extreme to me, to no matter what epoxy you use, what top coat you use, if you have a light color, in time it will do this. As far as heat, would you put a hot pan on any type of counter top? Of course not, but the staining can be avoided, depending on what the food is and what kind of top coat you have. But for the majority, the counter tops I do, all my customers are extremely happy with them, I also offer with my instal, a 1, 2 year follow up, if there are any type of scratches, I fix them. Now I tell people to use there head..."You dont cut things on your counter top, you use a cutting board." To me, that is just common sense. Sorry you had a bad experience with yours, I would suggest getting someone to come in and not redo the whole thing, but sand off the top coat and repair.

Did you put a clear coat on top? (Curious because I’m about to do mine)

You can polish out the scratches if anyone is wondering

Pick a better uv resistant epoxy that has a more durability in SHORE D hardness 86 or above.

Epoxy resin, as a clear finish, tends to yellow when consistently exposed to the UV rays of the sun. The rate of yellowing varies by the quality of the epoxy. A subpar epoxy will exhibit yellowing (among other issues) much sooner than a high-quality resin.

Can I use heat gun instead of torch to install stone coat counter top?

New products are out there now that eliminates the yellow and a clear hardener is the last step. Your contractor probably can come in and correct some areas to brighten it up. You still have a beautiful kitchen. 🌺
