Decoding the Triple Talaq Bill

Triple Talaq refers to a practice of divorce under Muslim personal laws, whereby a man can divorce his wife simply by pronouncing the word 'talaq' thrice in one sitting. Such a divorce was held irrevocable till the Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional in August 2017.

After the dissolution of the 16th Lok Sabha last month, the Modi government has introduced the bill afresh in the Parliament. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 seeks to make instant triple talaq a criminal offence punishable with three years in jail.

Kanika Katyal of the Indian Writers’ Forum spoke to Warisha Farasat, a New-Delhi based advocate who has represented the Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA) in the case.

This advocate doesn't speak a word of the Muslim Women bill. She doesn't know about 5 crore signatures out of which 2.7 crore are of Women against any kind of interference in personal laws of Muslims. She doesn't speak of criminalization of a civil contract.

Aur haan Quran khud nahi kehta talaak ke liye isiliye kayi maheeno(more than 3 months) ka lamba process h ye, jo log meri baat se agree krte h bhai wo video ko dislike zarur karen👎
