ADHD School Accommodations (Part 2)

I didn't have an IEP/504 but I still received these accommodations by asking (or my parents asking/fighting for them).

I am extremely privileged to have had parents who fought so hard for me to have these accommodations and I wouldn't be where I am today without them.

Schools are legally required to give you accommodations if you have an IEP or 504 Plan. I didn't have either but I still got accommodations by asking teachers/my parents asking/fighting for them. I am extremely privileged to have had parents who went to battle with teachers, the school board, and administrators to get me accommodations. I would not have done well in school without them.

If you think you have ADHD, I made a worksheet to help determine if you meet the diagnostic criteria and talk to your doctor about it!

I was in school in the 1990s and didn't have nearly as many accommodations. I am glad things are improving!

oh gosh, chewing gums. there's this one teacher who purposely disrupted the class so everyone could see me spit out my gum in the bin. never did it again since. for real though, it did help me focus a lot way before i even knew about adhd. thanks for the accidental reminder, it might be worth trying it again!

Didn't get diagnosed until I was 35. This just made me cry... Having this would have changed my entire life. Instead I was punished and never returned to school after high school. I work in a warehouse, don't drive and feel pretty useless. Happy that kids have these options now.

Wow. That’s awesome. I was dx at 15 but my parents never addressed it (I’m 44yo so it was a long time ago). When I was dx as autistic in February of this year, part of the emotional rollercoaster after diagnosis, was coming to terms that I’m am only where I am due to the lack of resources. It’s an emotional trauma and looking back on everything, it was very clear I needed help. And not the “just put her in gifted and talented” and “bump her up a grade in math” ways. I often wonder what I could have been and it’s almost like mourning a life lost to overwhelm, stress, and constant misunderstandings with everyone. I’m very happy to know you had those resources. My 13 yo son just got diagnosed with severe ADHD. We begin his medication this weekend. Fingers crossed that he has an easier path than I did.

Thank you for your videos. I find you are the Influencer that I most relate to. Everything you post about are all things I’ve done or had happen. It’s cool to watch you grow on your channel. Thank you for being you!

Growing up my mom never let me have any accommodations because "I can manage without them". I did have good grades but it took all of my energy and I literally did nothing else at all. Didn't have any social life or hobbies. Now I'm studying for my master and I have started to ask for accommodations or just do stuff that I need to. It's really helping and nobody really seems to mind 😊

I was one of those students who did really well without accommodations in school. I think the variety in tasks and content I got from having all my different classes was good for me. I did horribly once I got my first 9-5 job. Now, I’m working on applying the same model to my career: as an independent contractor working with several diverse clients in overlapping contracts. So far, it’s working great!

I think I have 504 and I just get extra time for assignments, which sometimes makes them even more stressful in a way. It’s nice to know that there are some good teachers out there who care and know how to deal with ADHD students.

This would have been so useful like 20 years ago.

This works great when your parents listen to you about and you have a good doctor

These sound like great accommodations. Would have helped me so much in school!

Sadly we’re not allowed to go to toilets often in classes or walk around
But when I do it helps alot

Neat! I use highlighters on everything and have taught myself to hyperfocus on schoolwork/tests, and my teachers let you fidget and play games( I just do the ones like 2048 so I can zone out on that/relax while still focusing on work). 10/10 love my teachers

Your first semester needs to be an extremely light work load. Always sign up for a physical elective every semester. After the first class, I would take my syllabi from all my classes, and write down all the due dates of all my assignments in order, so I knew exactly what was coming and when. I would break down all my reading to a daily reading routine. I found some smart friends and made a study group, I made friends with my teachers, and found a really quiet study place with very limited distractions. It helps to read aloud, and write important things that are hard to remember on your mirrors with dry erase markers. Get a lot of sleep. I graduated with honors, afterwards my immediate family admitted that they didn’t think I would make it through. I got a BS and a minor in business mgt., with honors. No meds, but Ginkgo biloba, and ginseng. No accommodations, because I had no idea I had ADD. I just thought everyone struggled like I did.

My adhd make me can not focus on your talking and finish watching this video.

But your expression and angle of your mouth looks like professional, and your video sounds very helpful and good.
Thanks for these tips, it will help many people.👍👍👍

I'm glad you had a good time in school, my experience was nothing like that, it's all just an anxious blur 😄 Such wonderful and understanding teachers are rare!

I glad that ADHD is more widely accepted now (or at least for this particular person) than it was in the 1980’s.

Back when I was diagnosed, teachers did not make a lot of accommodations, or even accepted it as real, instead calling it attention seeking hyperactivity disorder.

Still have it as an adult, and I’ve learned over time what works and doesn’t.
