I worked at Tesla starting in July of 2017 as an Operations Analyst out of the Bethlehem, PA distribution center facility and left as a Program Manager based out of Austin, TX as of September 2021. I spent most of my time in the distribution and supply chain organizations.

Before Tesla, I was a Director of Business Intelligence and Pricing at the largest Pet Food & Supply distributor in the US, Phillips Pet Food & Supplies based out of Easton, PA. My wife and I also owned a small business in Bethlehem, PA between 2016 and 2019.

My thoughts are my own and are not representative of everyone who currently works, or has worked at Tesla.

Kimball musk and company have some pretty neat shipping container farming ideas that grow the ideal vegetables from the ideal conditions created by the shipping container. It has HVAC controls to get just the right amount of moisture and temperature and so on and so forth. I'm sure it would have to be adapted for the Martian environment but I think they have a pretty good start with that kind of thing.

I think Tesla might get into making/manufacturing mining equipment to extract minerals and turn them into usable materials,

Things that definitely will have to be developed:
-Ways to remove perchlorates from the soil.
-Way better UV coatings for plastics, or plastics that are way more UV resistant than what we have now.
-Ways of recombining soil and atmosphere into the various building blocks. Basically every process we use to extract and refine elements and feedstocks here on earth will have to be miniaturized. This is such a ridiculously insane challenge by itself by the way.
-A whole lot of robots to collect and process mineral and liquid resources. If you need to mine an entire football field worth of material to get one gram of a critical metal you will probably delegate it to an automated mining system.
-A whole host of new 3d printing methods will have to be developed and streamlined.
It is hard to overstate how ridiculously material constrained the first few generations will be. When every gram of material you bring is worth more than gold it means you have to make EVERYTHING, from the most trivial alloy to the craziest organic molecule from local resources. We will have to make electronics components on the surface as well. You can't just bring over a new capacitor when one burns out. We can't even conceive of the things that will actually be in short supply. Basically take the entire world supply chain and put it in the trashcan. But the technologies it generates will be highly scalable throughout the solar system. Basically industrial revolution 2.0. It is one of the hardest problems we could possibly choose to solve, and I'm excited for it. It is just the beginning.

First principle’s thinking. It’s a commitment foreign to other companies

3:33 water is plentiful on Mars just under the surface as ice, you just scrape the dirt and melt it or evaporate

I said this to so many people a year ago. Why Tesla is a one company industrial revolution and it is either copy the structure of Tesla or (eventually) go out of business. Not just cars, but everything.

You should look into aircrete for building homes and buildings. it's cheap and fire proof. And super insulation.

It’s been clear to me for some that Elon is going to be the next big manufacturing magnate. He will be starting a new University to better support the needs of manufacturing. So many things need to be rethought this decade to compensate for the dropping employment.

A lot of water exists on Mars, however its mostly in the form of a salty brine. So a very efficient desalination process would be needed, which would also be beneficial here on earth! Other things that would be beneficial on both planets would be autonomous mining, finding a plastic alternative that doesn't require oil, a clean energy alternative to wind and solar (Mars has low amounts of both) like Fusion, autonomous robot workers. Anything thats too Mars specific will get pushback by short term thinking people, but the items in this list can directly benefit people on Earth so will be easier to build support for.
