The Netherlands was a republic from 1588 till 1795. So It had been done before. The declaration of independence was inspired by the Dutch "plakkaat van Verlatinghe" where the Dutch seceded from the Spanish empire.

there had only been monarchies? julius ceasar ruined the roman republic but before that it certainly wasnt a "monarchy" they had a senate and decided whois gonna control the army, and made sure to split the army up so they couldnt betray or try to become a monarch, julius was just lucky because 1/3 of the army was lost in a dumb eastern campaign, and went as an under dog to an unprepared pompei with the rest of the 1/3.
