Has BG3 Changed The CRPG Genre?

My Discord:

BG3 is done, this we know but will BG3 change the way CPRGs are made and will many of the people who became acquainted with the genre by way of BG3 be open to trying out the more classical styles and forms of RPGs? Will others try to replicate the Larian style and format in future CRPGs or will there be a parting of ways as a new genre, the Larian- RPG or LRPG becomes the thing that most interests people?

I think you are right. Most people (myself included) who have always played CRPGs are ready to play whatever comes out next...and are less hung up on just BG3.

Correction: More than 15 million if we go by Swen's latest number. DOS2 sold around 7.5 million and he said BG3 sold double the numbers of DOS2. Also makes sense since it's still in the top 10 best selling games on Steam .

I picked up BG3 because I liked the look of the story and characters, but I'm still playing it ~500 hours later because I've come to love the combat and want to keep getting better at it. I had never played a CRPG before, but when I'm finally done with BG3 i intend to explore the genre more.

Me too I couldn't play other turnt based games. BG3 really went so far abs beyond in its scope. Such a beautiful game. One of the best like elden ring.

Swen Vincke said himself that BG3 is not even a warmup of what they plan to do! there next game may blow it out of the water!

One thing I'm looking forward to seeing in the future is hybrids. Games closer to more classic Crpgs but which are inspired by the advances made by BG3 to the genre. Also, I just started my first run of Tyranny and I can't help but dream of a sequel to this game with the cinematic level of BG3. It would be glorious !

larian is for quite some time now what the old bioware was. a gold standard setter and innovator but quite alone in the heights at what they're making.

I think that you are right in some aspects. I am not a DnD fan, as it seems so many of the BG3 fans are. I had often played CRPGs though, but more in the Xcom sort of vein. As it happens it was my searching for an Xcom/chimera squad type game that led me to BG3.
And I wanted something with a story, with characters, and with a turn-based mechanic.
But not all CRPGs offer that. In the meantime I play other types of games, Town builders, Railway network sims, Factorio etc.
Yes Larian have secured the next sale with me already. I just hope that it is a good Sci-fi CRPG, that would be perfect. Until then I keep playing BG3.

I don't need to watch a 10 minute video to answer this question. The answer is YES.

Did you play solasta at all? And if so, what did you think?

At this point it's just poormans BG3, but the modding community is pretty good and the level cap without mods is still higher than BG3.

BG3 hasn't changed the genre at all. Everything it has done other games have done, and some of those older games did them better. Mass Effect and Dragon Age have done the cinematic dialogue for years, the reactivity and creative solutions were done in the Original Sin games (which BG3 pretty much is), and the engaging, epic storytelling was exactly what the original BG games did... and did better. The graphics and production values of BG3 are really good though, which always helps when marketing to the masses. BG3 just put all these things together in an interesting manner.

BG3 appealed to the masses, successfully so, so all this stuff that CRPGs have been doing for years (if not decades) seems new to them.

Also, you make a good point. A lot of these newbies are Larian fans more than anything.

I think they have. Think there's cool stuff in Larian's future.

i personally am curious what kind of Sci-fi universe Larian is going to make. (I hope Grimdark in the 2300 ) lately most sci-fi universes are Dergading at least the ones i enjoy ( 40k does not count its more fantasy in space)

changed? yes expectations have been increased forever with the staggering detail to production value, is the industry capable to deliver the same peak in the CRPG genre? no not even close, we'll not see another CRPG come even close to it in the next 10 years which is in time for larian next project. new and even classic CRPG devs cant even imagine the scale. Sure pathfinder is wider like way wider with 6 acts but BG3 act 3? atleast an decade ahead in tech.

Wrath of the Righteous is still the best CRPG for me. The “epicness” just blows BG3 away. Unfortunately I Wasn’t too big of a fan of Rogue Trader.

The market is different to when Bioware grew huge in xbox era. If you are attracting young newcomers today, being on the big TV and being a simplified controller game isn't the right path. You have to be on PC, or touchscreen, and you need social features like coop. People getting hung up on full voice acting are missing the new wave. Is Lethal Company fully voice acted?

BG3 only players will continue to comeback to that game only as new mod content is released, it another Skyrim.
