There's something special about this more "upbeat" version of the song: the positive lyrics have the chance to swing even harder than they did before

I prefer this version to the original for the very fact that it's upbeat yet about something so deep and bruising and painful. A reminder to us all to be kind to yourself and love yourself deeply else you lose yourself and that's one more beautiful soul gone from the world without ever having shone with the tremendous light and love that's in every one of us and that's a sad thing when that happens.

Man the part where the friend says "and light it up forever" gives me goosebumps

Astounding in every way. My wife went to high school with Will Oldham. She's always said he's way beyond cool. I just thought she had a crush on him. Turns out, I can't blame her.

This song is the most relevant song in my life right now. Life imitates art imitates life...

Really an absolutely miraculous reimagining of one of the bleakest songs ever written, just by upping the tempo, adding some drums and a couple backing vocals. What before was the distilled essence of forlorn and lonely has been transubstantiated into divinely hopeful, warm and redemptive.

I love this song and I used to live right around the corner from where much of this was filmed in Glasgow, Scotland. How cool!

By far my favorite version of this song. Sometimes when the darkness is so heavy and thick the only thing it leaves to do - the only thing left to do is sing out, clueless as to your singing a dirge or a testimonial just sing out and start moving ignoring you don't know forwards from backways, and hope you don't wind up taking a spill at the edge of the cliff's face. You just gotta hope that if you do, some noble little hardscrabble tree growing out of the cracks is both willing and able to catch and carry you a moment.

I think this version needs to exist next to the original one. When you're upbeat it doesn't mean your depression is gone. The same goes for this song. Even if it's upbeat, the depression (and need to talk about it with a friend) is still there. It may be even harder to talk about your depression if you feel good, because you don't want to ruin the moment.

Somehow this version slipped past me for years and I only discovered it a few weeks ago. I can't stop listening to it...

I’ve never heard 3 versions of the same song that were equally amazing.

Good god. I'm speechless. First time I heard Oldham's version. What a writer. That's as good as it gets.
