David Gyasi & Tamzin Merchant Discuss New Epic Fantasy, ‘Carnival Row’

Actors David Gyasi and Tamzin Merchant join us on BUILD to discuss Amazon Prime Video's newest fantasy saga, ‘Carnival Row’. Gyasi and Merchant talk us through what went into creating this fantastical drama set in a noire Victorian world full of mythological beasts, as well as giving us an insight into what it was like working with co-stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne.

She landed the role of Daenerys and filmed the pilot, then eventually lost it to our beloved Emilia Clarke. Emilia will always be Dany of course but I believe Tamzin too would've been a fantastic Mother of Dragons. As for Carnival Row, the Imogen/Agreus arc was really compelling, great to watch and very relatable too, that's what I enjoyed most about it

Carnival Row is an amazing show. I’ve already watched it twice straight threw. Have been waiting for a show to fill the void left by the last two seasons and eventual end of GOT. This show gives that and much, much more and is completely and TOTALLY different (thank God 😂). A fantastical and lushly original show, yet very much grounded in our all to real and current tumultuous reality in terms of class, race, entitlement, immigration and societal and governmental abuses. While also putting on full display what it STILL means, in 2019, to love outside the taboo lines society deems “acceptable”. And I have to write, the love scenes between Tamzin and David’s characters are the HOTTEST sex scenes since Outlander and are just beautiful done and 💯 believable. You root for them because their love feels earned over the course of the entire season, their heat a honest and palpable build crackling with sexual tension, not just throw away gratuitous sex. It’s a slow burn that culminates with a screen set on fire. These two give knockout performances that make me want an entire show ONLY about these two 🤣 We root for them, we WANT them to make it, so badly, and have the life together they so desperately and hungrily want, and have defied society, race and class “norms” and even brothers in order to have a chance to live. There’s real chemistry between these two that lights up the screen. True love never looked so sexy.
