Tim Does Canisters

These days, people tend to use their phone for taking pictures. However until fairly recently, taking photographs meant loading a roll of 35 mm film into a camera. And those of us who remember those days will also remember that those rolls of film came in a smart little plastic canister with a snap-on lid.

Tim remembers those days. He also has a lot of those plastic film canisters. And being Tim, he has discovered all sorts of alternative uses for those little canisters!!

One trick that I used to do with film canisters as a child was: make holes in one, put carbon tablets inside and close it up with a crumpled up latex glove which was fastened to the canister with a rubber band. Then I would bury it under a bit of earth in a flower pot.
When you poured water over it the tablets would fizz up and the carbon inflate the glove so that a hand would "grow" out of the ground like a plant or an undead slowly emerging from his grave.

Fun fact: frog breeders use film canisters when breeding poisons dart frogs. The frogs lay their eggs in the canisters.

The fizzy tablet effect is marvellous. Find a tablet that fits snuggly in the top of the lid and fill the canister to about half full with water, then when you put the lid on and turn the whole arrangement upside-down you have about 3 seconds to get out of the way! Lovely video Tim.
