Fado, however, is neither happy nor sad. It is an episode during an intermission. It gave shape to the Portuguese soul when it didn’t yet exist and yearned for everything without the strength to really yearn. Strong souls attribute everything to Destiny; only the weak believe in their own will, because it doesn’t exist.
