When I was in Greece to compete for Canada at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games, the country was in terrible shape.

During the competitions, security had to be very tight; spectators were limited to friends and family members of the athletes only; athletes, coaches, and volunteers were also faced with tough austerity as they weren't given gifts, food, or water during the Opening and Closing Ceremonies at Kallimarmaro Stadium with no immediate access to washrooms; and national delegations had very limited opportunities to visit its famous landmarks like the Acropolis of Athens due to frequent protests at Syntagma Square.

Things were so bad in Greece in 2011 that my late mom was actually robbed.

While she did report the incident to Greek Cops, when my late mom and I returned to Canada, she actually forgave the thief as she knew that the Greeks were going through rough times along with little money or employment.
