Fascinating! Loved the comparisons of the two building methods, different materials, equipment, etc. Thanks for all the lessons learned.

I’m in HVAC. Been doing it for 25 years. I know a couple of trademen/tradeswomen that really know what there doing. Anyone can install duct, anyone can install a heat pump etc. Here is the catch, are you going to read the install manual and have the humility to ask lots of questions if you don’t understand. You need the right training; hard to get but thank god for YouTube. As you found out, you had to fly guys in to do the some of the install and commissioning of the equipment. Being good at the trades is more about emotional intelligence than anything. Do want to learn and broaden your knowledge or do want to install 10 AC’s and say, “I know what I’m doing.” Above all this is the pressure from the employer to be fast and profitable.
The solution is you have to self train, read manuals and follow the instructions, call the support line and when you find the right trades person try to get all the knowledge you can out of them. Watch videos. I keep tons of notes on my phone, and on my computer. Above all else try to drop the ego and work on listening skills. I’m done with my rant and I love your channel.

Glad you mentioned the book "A Pattern Language", it's an excellent accessible book filled with imporant details about what makes spaces (indoor and outdoor), welcoming, livable and attractive to their inhabitants.

Corbett, I know this video is not one of your newer ones but I have watched it a few time's and as I get closer to building a forever home for my family I was wondering did you know about the CERV2 before you picked your ERV and if not now that you do would you still go with the ERV you have or change it up and go with the "smarter" CERV2? If not why? I have watched all of your videos and know how elegant/complex it is but I'm sure you can do the same with the CERV2. Also your design gave me the idea to put an exhaust vent in my kitchen trash cabinet :) Thanks.

Hey Corbett, rare that I catch you making a mistake, but Miele actually has all their ovens (speed, convection, steam combi) in both 24 and 30 variants, as well as a pro line of mega 48" gas top double oven ranges, and they make a few cook tops at 42. Only thing they don't make in a larger variant is the built in microwaves, those are all 24".

I can see with cathedral ceilings and your climate how it wasn't worth it to frame the eaves separately. But in a cold, snowy, sunny climate, we need a cold roof to prevent ice dams. So we are doing basically boxes for the conditioned/air sealed space, then roof trusses are going above that and creating the big overhangs.

Any details on the gauge and type of metal roof used for @HomePerformance ?

I look at a passive house as the direction I want to go, not necessarily set on actually meeting all of the requirements. I want too many LARGE windows, lots of floor to ceiling type windows. The main goals I have for what I want are a solid, well built house that will last and be pleasant to live in. And second I want it insulated and sealed well enough that I can control the temperature and air quality to my liking, and not spend a fortune on the power bill (I’ve since made my mind up about power bills as well…).

How do you tour your house? Doing a high performance build in TN right now and have been following you guys closely.

Circus tent? Intriguing idea. Makes me wonder about the cost of renting that.

@Bill Do you mind sharing which brand of windows you used?

Moving the kitchen fan outside is a good idea because it also allows you to isolate the vibration. Curious but why do you need a 700 CFM fan inline to deliver 500 CFM of makeup air to the kitchen? A typical 30-inch gas stove with 4 burners on high would be worst case around 42, 000 BTU/Hr. At 100 CFM per 10, 000 BTU/Hr, that's 420 CFM. Maybe less fan is more beneficial (less noise, less heating of cold air, etc.). Perhaps there is something I am missing.

Why r u reluctant to put radon fan in? You’re house is already built how will you be able to seal slab better at this point?
