Learn German the natural way with comprehensible easy language input!

"Dinner for One" is Germany's weird New Year's Eve Tradition! "Dinner for One" is a British comedy sketch in black and white from the 1960s, in which Miss Sophie celebrates her 90th Birthday with a celebratory dinner, however, all of her close friends died a long time ago. Though that doesn't stop Miss Sophie from inviting them to the dinner party! While a very popular New Year's Eve tradition in Germany, "Dinner for One" is hardly known in Britain. Why then, has "Dinner for One" become part of Germany's culture? In this video I will tell you how a British comedy sketch ended up being one of Germany's most surprising traditions and what exactly "Dinner for One" is about. Viel Spaß!

Learn German the natural way with comprehensible easy German!

In the classroom we are told to endlessly study grammar and memorise concepts, however, research shows that language is acquired through authentic experiences. The concept of Natürlich German is based on Dr. Stephen Krashen's second language acquisition theory, in which one uses comprehensible input to acquire a language, rather than 'learn' it.

Anna, danke für dein Arbeiten! I’ve learned German from 8 to 16 years old, but since then I haven’t practice it. Now, 12 years later, I want to remember German, so I’m watching your videos :) Du bist super!!!!

That's funny - I'm from the UK and, while the name "Dinner for One" rings a bell, I've never seen it and I would have been able to say what it was.

I saw it last New Years' eve after someone talked about this tradition on Twitter... I sincerely laughed as a young man, so I guess it's a good universal tradition <3

We have the same tradition :)
We watch soviet comedy about a man who went to sauna with his friends on Silvester to a farewell party, they got drunk, and put him on an airplane instead of a person who was going away. He arrived in another city, got taxi, and named his adress, because most of cities in USSR had street with similar names, and buildings were similar, he arrived at this address, got into apartment, and felt asleep, and then the real owners came to the apartment.

In meinen Meinung der Film witzig ist. James wird immer betrunkener. Der Schauspieler war sehr gut. Tolle Fähigkeiten

How very odd to have this tradition! Ein bisschen lustig und ein bisschen verrückt 😂 But I am English and I was ten years old in 1972 yet I have never heard of Dinner for One!

Even more interesting is that I’ve never heard New Year’s Eve called Sylvester before! I thought that was someone’s name!
