Grumps stumbles down memory lane, and says goodbye to Richie Cole...thought he was live on FB, but should've checked his pulse first!

That was great! I worked with Richie for a couple of years in Trenton, NJ. He put together his 8 piece thing and he needed a guitar player who could read his charts. I worked with him off and on when he would come back to town. Trenton was his hometown. So it was nice while it lasted. He also let me bring some of my own charts and encouraged me to keep writing. He was definitely one of my music mentors. I did a CD called, "For My Jazz Mentors" and he guested on the recording. One of the tunes he wrote is on it called, "NY Serenade" is on the CD. I appreciate you as a musician and your generosity in teaching. I have your book, "Solo Jazz Guitar Etudes". I'm workin' at it! 👍👍

Really enjoyed the Richie Cole got to meet Richie and share some dinners, and music, through my dear Sister, Candace who dated Richie. He was a fun person to be around.
Even played some guitar, , , though he was on a much higher level. He was generous that mailed a letter with some of his CDs, a few months ago. He is very Bruce!

Love this one! Bruce, you’ve become one of my favorite musicians and inspirations for the instrument since hearing you on Jude Gold’s podcast and, of course, on the Wank with Scott and Troy. Thank you for putting these up with the lovely duets as well. My love for Jazz has been reborn in almost it’s entirety listening to your wisdom and even buying a master class here and there, so thank you again for being a great and at times grumpy human being, cheers! ;)

Bruce, I am sorry for your/our loss. I just had the pleasure of attending your recital in Ojai in early March. The music was great and the book, later, was entertaining. Following WBGO, my station, I saw the announcement regarding Richie Cole and listened to the video posted on the WBGO website. (I came discovered Cole in the early 80's when studying music; a gem.) I was listening to the guitar and said damn that guitar sounds familiar and the guitarist should be wearing a cowboy hat. Great performance that night. You guys killed it. Bebop, cowboy bop, whatever, keep it up.

Thanks Bruce for the trip down memory lane. I was reminded of a time that I had the privilege to do a one time gig with Richie. Had that one buried deep in the memory storage trunk. I was also reminded of a time of your generosity and kindness when in San Fransisco, ages ago. I was extremely green at the time but if memory serves me correctly, it was late pianist Bill Bell who encouraged me to stop by Pearls where you were playing. You graciously allowed me to play a few numbers. I have never forgotten what that all signified for me and am always grateful. Thank you.

One of the last times we played at the new morning in Paris, Chan showed up and gave everyone in Dizzy’s group a copy of that bird book that you speak of.. probably the best book on Charlie Parker in existence..

Thanks, Bruce. That was great, and reminded me of how encouraging you were to me back in the days at Pearls'. I sat in for the first time and you said, "you should be playing out every night." You then invited me to the bar and bought me a beer and talked about the whole jazz guitar thing including writing lefty/playing righty. You have no idea how much that all meant to me. That was just before I left the Bay Area and I always regretted losing touch with you (although I have kept up somewhat with our old friend Bryan McConnell). Anyways, your stories tonight were just great. And there were both fun and touching moments with you and Pam. Best to you both. Jeff
