NOTE: HD powders when used with a damp sponge or brush will greatly reduce flashback. HD powders hate dry skin, and will cling and flashback - they aren't so problematic on oily skin, but it can still happen. When dealing with flash, editorial, brides etc... Its still highly suggested to not use a HD powder. Better to be safe than sorry.

Foundation flashback is the problem that happens when you've applied your makeup and then had pictures taken with a flash and suddenly you have a face that is either white or far, far lighter than your actually skin colour/body.

This happens mainly when SPF is used in Foundation. And also when an SPF is used under foundation.

NOW - SPF is very very important, and i'm not stating otherwise. Its one of the best things you can do to protect your skin from future damage. So here are some things to think about to prevent foundation flashback.

1. Don't use a foundation that contains SPF if you know you're going to be photographed with a flash.

2. Don't use a SPF and a SPF foundation if you know you're going to be photographed.

3. Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide are mainly responsible for foundation flashback - but only when they are active ingredients (meaning in high concentrations).

4. If you're using a SPF foundation then use a setting powder that has a colour to it (ie - make up for ever super matte loose - or any other colour powder). This will help shield you from the flashback.

5. If you're a makeup artist doing bridal NO SPF what-so-ever unless its really really necessary.

6. HD powder that are 100% silica are a NO NO when using flash. They are the worst of the worst. Using a very light hand is fine, but if you apply with even the faintest of a heavy hand - well, you can see from the picture that i took.

7. Mineral makeup which contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide doesn't pose the same problems as much as liquid foundations do BUT caution is still advised. NOTE: I use mineral makeup when filming and when i'm going out. I had a photo shoot a few years back and i used a mineral foundation. While there was not flashback i was constantly having to "blot" the skin because the flash makes the skin look very very shiny.

8. When in doubt, test your foundation yourself first, to make sure :)

You literally saved me! Doing my first formal face on a client tomorrow & I will be leaving my HD powder at home!

I find that setting flashback-y powder with setting spray/water and then lightly blending it in with a stippling brush prevents the flashback. Downside is that it's no longer super matte, but dewy works for me.

Can you make a video on loose powders that do not cause flashback ? Please ! Would love to hear your opinion.

You have to apply it with a even fair amount and then when you feel like its covered the places you want, kabuki brush, or fan brush the hell out of those areas getting every crevice and skin, without damaging your foundation/concealer. It actually spent like 30 minutes taking flash photos and trying to figure out how to get this white ghost cloud away.

I did makeup for a wedding back in June, and I used Smash box's HD powder. The lady at Sephora said That it would NOT cause a white cast in photos, I should have listened to my gut. Well, it did cause a white cast and I was completely mortified. Luckily, the photographer could fix it, and the bride wasn't upset at all. That is the last time I will ever use a HD powder on a bride.

Pressed powder deposits more colour and can alter your liquid foundation colour or deepen it. Loose powder is a light dusting of colour and adds texture without altering the liquid beneath.

I love your entire collection of videos. You get right to the point... and they are a perfect length for being able to sit down to watch several in a row.

I watched a video by Jordan Liberty (Give Good Face) who is a pro Makeup Artist and Pro Photographer. According to him the secret is how you apply the powder and which powder on which skin type. A white HD powder applied with a fan brush in a very light amount works perfectly and will not flash back, too much HD powder applied on dry skin will flash back as the White powder doesn't mix with the oil in the skin (there is no excess oil in dry skin) so it will only sit on the top-hence the flash back. That is why baking with Laura Mercier under the dry eye area causes flash back.

Is it just me seeing this? I think the colour of your tshirt and those orchids beside you really bring out your eyes and makes your skin look really good!

I have the Lancôme Idole Ultra 24H foundation which is really good but has SPF 15. So since I paid so much for it in going to keep using it. However I was using that foundation with the Laura Mercier Translucent Powder...and omg I was like Casper. So I guess since I have a darker complexion I'm going to buy a banana powder instead.

I love MUFE HD powder. I'm around NC45 in Mac and I have no problems with it when having my picture taken. The very first time I used it, a year ago-that was a disaster. I didn't buff it in and used too much. I now use a dense brush, just a bit of the powder and to be sure, I spray a little Mac Fix+. I love the stuff.

The only problem with HD powder like this one is its misuse. It only flashes back if you use too much. I can tell by the poof of powder when you put the brush to your face that it was was wayyy too much powder. You only need a very small amount of it. Also, it needs to hit a bit of moisture to completely go transparent (over foundation, concealer, etc). I use it all the time on clients in flash photography and don't have an issue. When used right, it is really an amazing product!

I am currently using Diorskin Forever Foundation and its just blends well on my face and I use Sigma make up brushes the f80 flat kabuki and it just applies it very well. Also, try taking cod liver oil has it helped me with my very dry skin and biotin. We need some inner loving and not just on the outside. Avene and Bioderma moisturizers are really good :)

I had the SAME problem when I used the Makeup Forever HD powder. I LIGHTLY applied it to set my foundation, went out and all the pictures look like I am glowing! Great video - keep up the good work!

I'm so glad I found this video. I've been having the same issue with my own makeup. I read a while back that the oxides in mineral makeup cause the flashback. But it seems that mineral makeup is growing more popular. Last night, I did makeup for a fashion show, just to work on building my skills. The models looked lovely; they and the designers they walked for were very happy with the looks. But when I took photos, that damn flashback made it look like they weren't wearing very little makeup! Gonna invest in some pressed powders. And will be following Goss

Do you have any suggestions for a good translucent powder that photographs well? And won't make olive skin looked washed out? :(
