The Meaning of Martyr in Christianity

The Christian martyrs are people who die for their faith in Jesus Christ.

The Greek origin of the word martyr (martus) means "witness."

Jesus Christ compelled his disciples to be witnesses before ascending to heaven:

"You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
Acts 1:8

That is indeed what the Apostles did. They went out all over the earth and, except for the Apostle John, were killed as martrys.

Martyrdom can expedite the process towards canonization as a saint in the Catholic Church. Through careful study of the life and death of a person, the Church might make a Decree of Martyrdom clearing the way for beatification and a step towards canonization.

While we may not be faced with the difficult choice of faith or death, we can be Christ's witnesses. We can stay strong in our faith even when others stand in opposition to us.

Thanks for the video. I have returned to the Catholic Church and have been studying one or two Saints most days. It is an incredible witness and inspiration to hear of someone who (didn’t try to be martyred) but lived their God and the Lord Jesus so much that they were perfectly willing to be martyred rather then recant their Faith.

May all of us have such a deep Faith they we two would be perfectly willing and ready to be martyred. I fear this strength may be necessary in the coming years in the USA and worldwide.

Thank you for doing this because I saw an ad for a FB page called Voice of the Martyrs. On one comment someone said the word martyr doesn’t only refer to people who have died but also people who have been persecuted. I knew that wasn’t right but it troubled me because these terms get watered down and that’s not good.

Death is a consequence of sin. 'Martyrs' suffered and died not because they are holy, but because they are sinners. God is just and we suffer our suffer, we die in our death. Only God suffered and died for others✅

I had conversation with non believer. My argument was disciples were willing to die for what they believed. Nobody will die for what they have witnessed or believed.

But he counter with the faith in Islam is similar. They are willing to blow themselves out with what they believe.

How do we differentiate between them? We absolutely sure that one is in the name of God but the other is pure evil. But how do we explain this matter?

I was interested in the root origin of the word, Mar -Tyr I think it has a Norse/Latin connection.
Tyr, a Norse God, sacrifices his hand to a wolf called Fenrir to save the world and Mars being a war God is often associated with Tyr. Losing a hand to save others, willingly is the ultimate sacrifice . I maybe wrong.

Martyrdom is Suicide viewed in a different way by all viewing parties
Putting yourself in a situation you know for sure u would die in and then dying from it is considered martyrdom if u were standing up for your religious belief or sacrificing yourself for the perceived or actual benefit of others whereas its considered suicide if you just wanted to end your life or personal suffering or wanted an easy way out of it all.

Yes it’s true, but it’s wrong 😑 because those other people will eventually become martyrs themselves. Until life cycles back through again. To stay in the game, the secret is to build up the mind, and consciousness together with the body and have faith.
