Climax 9 Debut at Cass Scenic Railroad

For their 2019 Rail Heritage Weekend, the Cass Scenic Railroad staged two major firsts. The star of this year's show was the return of Climax 9, built originally for the Moore Keppel & Company in 1919. After several years in the restoration shop, the 9 was restored back to operation under her own power!

The first run took place on new trackage too, over the old Greenbrier Subdivision of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. Following a devastating flood in 1985 that washed out the track, the railroad has slowly been rebuilt to eventually carry trains alongside the Greenbrier River to the town of Durbin. This photo freight train would be the farthest north a train had traveled on this line.

I love it! Cass Scenic is a fantastic place to visit. The locomotives are great fun to watch and listen to. They work HARD. Finally, the scenery is beautiful. If you haven't been there, you are missing one of the best steam locomotive operations in the country.

Wow nice footage! When I saw this engine 5 years ago it was in pieces. I am glad to see it back together and running. Thanks for sharing.

I've been watching and waiting for this locomotive to be steamed up. I like how the natural wood details look on it, they have done a great job.

I was born and live in the city where all climax locomotives were built. My house is a mile from the old factory. It's wonderful to see apart of my hometown heritage running and working as it was made to do. It's to bad the historical museum in town only has a static display of one that hasn't run in decades.

Great video, thanks, showing a remarkable locomotive - never seen one like that before and it has a fascinating beat to it. With Shays playing tunes as well, who could ask for more! Best wishes, Bob K.
