Here's a recent favorite after I refused to explain anything any longer to a narcissistic church attender: "You need to tell me what i did wrong, so i can defend myself!" They weren't even willing to consider offering a hollow apology.

AMEN! I've heard ALL of them and I don't believe ANY of them! "BUT", ...LOL...of course the person saying these types of apologies are the ones that are always looking for ME to say "I'm sorry" and mean it in the most caring and compassionate way!!

I heard all of those all the time from my mother. My father was a classic enabler. However, he thought I had an “in” with my mother and ONCE asked me if I would run interference for him. He wouldn’t do it for us kids (I’m the youngest of three) OR for himself, but had no problem putting me in the line of fire. I’m proud of myself for answering simply, “No, I will not.”

So spot on with all four of those apologies. The problem in my house is he NEVER apologizes, ever! 26 years of marriage and almost a year of dating prior to that and never has he apologized once for anything. I can cry, get mad, prove my point, even put the blame on myself, and he NEVER says he's sorry for anything, let alone an apology. And he has about 10 huge truckloads of apologies due me.

Great classification. I have some thoughts on if apology. I sometimes apologize this way, not that im trying to shift responsbility or anything, its a genuine apology together with an inquiery to make sure if what i did or said was truly unacceptable. Not sure how to explain better… in a nutshell i dont really mean manipulation playing games when apologizing this way.
