Mudslides and flooding caused by heavy rain in Southern California earlier this week have now left at least 17 people dead and more than two dozen injured.
Officials in Santa Barbara County fear the death toll could rise and there are about 13 people reported missing.
Most of the fatalities occurred in the wealthy suburb of Montecito, where powerful mudflows lifted houses from their foundations.
The weather cleared up on on Wednesday, allowing rescue teams to intensify operations .
