Amazing demonstration. One of the best hapkido films.

Love Hapkido! Thanks for the vid. Many people don’t think traditional Hapkido is effective for self defense. But, I can personally attest that it is. People also used to tell me that high kicks don’t work. They do. I studied Hapkido in the late 80s through the early 90’s. When I moved away there were no schools in my area. So, while in college, we started a full contact kickboxing club. We had many members and from many disciplines. They elected me president of the club. Hapkido style kicks are very powerful and worked perfectly. I grew up boxing, as my father was a boxer. Hapkido kicks combined with boxing was a great combination for kickboxing. After I graduated, I moved again. The only schools in my area were TKD and jujitsu. So, I tried jujitsu. I just absorbed what they showed me for several months. Later, they knew that I was from a Hapkido background, and ask me what I would do in this situation or that, from a Hapkido prospective. They were open minded, not at first, ha! but eventually. They wanted to try anything that they felt could work, and were extremely interested in our Judo style take downs and throws. Previously, I hadn’t found much use for the Aikido style joint locks and such, but when rolling around on the mat, those techniques were extremely beneficial. Even the skeptics were convinced that there was something there that they could use. I was amazed, and they were too, at how I could so quickly grab someones wrist, leg, foot, etc., and manipulate it in such a manner, that it added an element to what I was being taught in jujitsu. I had no idea that these techniques could work so well from the ground, as I had never trained in that manner, but used in combination with what I had learned from them, the effectiveness of those techniques became painfully obvious. In conclusion, I don’t think that Hapkido is a complete martial art for MMA etc. in fact, no martial art is, at least that I have seen. But, combined with boxing and some ground techniques from BJJ or Traditional Jujitsu, it offers tremendous value.

But some of those high and jump kicks are going to be harder to execute as you get older. The knee and groin kicks are great for any age. I would love to see a set of techniques that are usable as you get older and your body is more limited.
