16th-note funk: When you want a drummer, but then discover you don't need one.

The first bassist I ever heard play 16th note funk was Rocco Prestia. I can’t recall if it was You Got To Funkifize or What Is Hip, either way he really got my attention!

there are times where i pick up the bass and play nothing but this line for like 20 minutes. you just get lost in it.

Jerry Jemmott was the birth of this. Jaco threw rocket fuel on it.

Even Scott’s putting more space after that first bit where Jaco’s still running ghost 16ths

Remember, before there was Jaco... there was Rocco.

There are some very early hints of this style of bass line on Darling Dear...James Jamerson Jackson five.

Jaco is all that but Rocco Prestia was bumping 16th note grooves since 1968

When I was a teenager in the 70s I was a prog rock fan but I listened to Jaco's solo record till the record wore out.

... I could understand that you hadn’t heard “What Do I Have to Do “ Marva Whitney... but I’m sure you heard Francis Rocco Prestia Tower Of Power bassist!!! and Paul Jackson Headhunters bassist... both played & recorded 16th note funk grooves before
Mr. Pastorius...

bass player from tower of power was the first I heard play 16th notes riffs

Leave it up to Jaco... Just like the Godfather of fusion, punk -funk....
There are great out there no doubt...
But he was one step ahead....
And for any of us fans and bass players alike, that got a chance to see either Weather report or Jaco...live..
Really got a treat....

Then put it on your bucket list to check out Jaco's son....
Oh yes...

Video Idea. Why do bass strings always rattle?

The answer is right in front of you. It is Jerry Jemmott who is the father of 16th note funk bass.

But he got it from Rocco Prestia in Tower of Power. That's all Rocco did.
