Roku's message to Aang: "You must be decisive"

Dialogue:
Roku: In my life I tried to be disciplined and show restraint, but it backfired. When Fire Lord Sozin took advantage of my restraint and mercy. If I had been more decisive and acted sooner, I could've stopped Sozin and stopped the war before it started. I offer you this wisdom, Aang- you must be decisive.

So basically Roku didn’t tell Aang to kill Ozai, but to think quickly before it’s too late?

Aang absolutely followed this advice, but in his own way. He intentionally left the Avatar state so he could trap Ozai and found an allternate route to ending the war

The shot of the air temples burning is such an emotional gut punch

This has more impact if you remember that he indirectly let his friend commit the Air Nomad Genocide and the 100 Years War.

His is Fire Nation, so it must pain him to see his own ppl being oppressive, and even more painful that his indecision led to Aang's ppl die mercilessly to them

I feel kinda sad about how a lot of people dislike Roku (some even claiming he was the worst avatar) because he didn't stop the war before it started. I mean, of course he could've stopped it, but think about his position: His best friend was turning into a monster and the right thing to do would be to put him down for good. Like Aang in the comics, who only accepted to end Zuko's life (if he ended up like Ozai) because Katara made him do it, Roku couldn't see Sozin's transformation, and he didn't have anyone to tell him what Sozin was becoming or what Sozin would do. Roku deserves more, he regretted and blamed himself for the state of the world and was a great guide to Aang.

Roku is without a doubt the most skilled and most badass Avatar ever. He was literally able to control the world with his fingertips. Aang still the GOAT tho because of Energy Bending.

For everyone who claims that Roku was weak for allowing letting Sozin live and everything that happened, i can think of a couple of other factors (my opinions) as to why he didn't kill Sozin, aside from the friendship factor: 1) Killing Sozin would've had disastrous consequences on the Fire Nation e.g. a Civil War perhaps. 2) Kyoshi and the other Avatars likely advised him against him killing Sozin. People tend to forget Kyoshi was generally peaceful and only used violence as a last resort. 3) Killing the monarch of a powerful nation likely would've brought about a dim view of the Avatar. Remember, Kyoshi didn't even really kill Chin the Conqueror, and yet, his descendants blamed her and the other Avatars down 200 years after the incident.

Long story short, he had to be careful about this

It is definitely not your fault Roku, it is obviously Sozin’s fault, end of story.

Idk if anyone realizes this. What all past lives told Aang here, is what Korra does.

Roku said you must be decisive. Korra didn't hesitate to take down or kill anyone when its needed to.

Kyoshi, only justice will bring peace. Korra has done that many times.

Kuruk, you must shape your own destiny and the worlds. Korra does that too.

Yang Chen, Selfless duties calls you to do everything it takes to protect the world. Korra sacrifices her life to protect the Air nation and did what it took to set them free.

Kyoshi killed whom i assumed was her first love to stop him from his planned killing spree, kyoshi will drill roku for letting his friend live. I bet a flying fan was the first thing roku saw when he crossed the spirit world.

I think Aang doesn't fully understand what the previous avatars are actually saying:

Roku: Be decisive, because once it's done you can't take it back. This could also be in favor of sparing the Fire Lord, because killing him WOULD be something you can't take back.

Was Roku trying to be ambivalent or what?

In my (controversial) opinion, I think Roku should have found a middle ground with Sozin rather than just totally shut him down.

In theory Sozin's plan could have done much good for the world as long as it didn't go too far. With the Fire Nation's wealth they could have greatly improved the poorest area's of the Earth Kingdom and increased trade with the Water Tribes.

In a weird way Aang rectified this error by working with Zuko.

Inaction is not just being passive, it is condoning whatever happening. Balking and trembling against what's to be done is just being weak. Roku was too naive and forgiving, and look what happened. All those people he indirectly killed by not doing what's necessary.

So he's advising Aang not to fall to his own mistake. He must be decisive. Aang may have found a better path, although I think it was something of a Deus Ex Machina, but if the Lion Turtle haven't taught him to just pasify Ozai, he was gonna have to kill the Fire Lord. Because he had to be decisive.

It is definitely not your fault Roku. I find it completely absurd and beyond ridiculous that some people not all, but some who watch Avatar: The Last Airbender are blaming the 100 year war on both Aang & especially Roku. The one person that everyone with common sense should be blaming is the disgusting monster himself Sozin. He is the one that caused all this century long suffering and pain. Never ever blame the protectors of the world, always blame the perpetrators who harm the world period.
