How to Calculate True Airspeed with Cruise Performance Chart - For Student Pilots

There are two ways to calculate your true airspeed. You can use your E6B to convert your indicated airspeed (if you assume indicated airspeed is equal to calibrated airspeed) to a true airspeed or you can use your engine performance chart in your flight manual to find an engine power setting at a specific RPM, altitude and temperature and then use this power setting to find true airspeed on your cruise performance chart.

To me, it makes sense to use the E6B method for the climb phase of flight since you will already be targeting an indicated airspeed to fly anyways (best rate of climb). Then, for cruise and descent, we can target an RPM to fly and use this in our performance charts to find true airspeed.

This video gives an example of how to use the performance charts to find true airspeed in cruise and descent.

I really like the way you use engine power setting and cruise performance. It makes so much sense because you usually just fly at an RPM during cruise
