Living By the Gun in Turkana

The use of guns has mainly been a preserve of men among the pastoralist communities as they battled raiders and other potential attackers. But a group of women and young girls in Turkana North, some as young as 14 years are going against the grain by using arms to protect their lives and property after quite a number of their men were killed by raiders. Franklin Macharia brings us the story of courage and determination by the women and girls of Turkana in our new series, living by the gun.

This reminds me of a Comrade we used to call "Baragoi" who was once reprimanded by his own Mother arguing that he was still an armature in weapons after working for over ten years in police force. He once told me that his mom could dismantle and reassemble an AK 47 in less than three minutes and yet she had never attended any military academy. Fear those women.

Damn those guns are dope. The g3 will set you back 3, 000 dollars in the USA. Those ak47 would fetch 1500 likely. Also they should not give these girls a 7.62x51 to train. You can see it kicks like a damn mule to them. But that’s what they got so props to them.

Brave girls. However they need to be exposed to a different environment and make a real difference in the world. Schools, roads, hospitals, electricity etc need to be done ASAP in these areas. These girls are young and full of potential.
