Ideal vs. Real Gases: Cooling Balloons filled with Helium and Air in Liquid Nitrogen

preview_player
Показать описание
A comparison is made of shrinking behavior of balloons cooled in liquid nitrogen. One balloon is filled with air, the other with helium. Also, the change in density of a helium balloon as it warms is observed.
0:10 - Description of how to set up the experiment
0:54 - Balloon filled with air is placed in liquid nitrogen
1:08 - Use of Charles's Law to predict how much the balloon should shrink.
1:56 - Air filled balloon is warmed back to room temperature
2:15 - Explanation that air is not an ideal gas at 77 K
2:58 - Helium filled balloon is placed in liquid nitrogen
3:45 - Liquid nitrogen is poured onto a helium filled balloon
4:07 - Helium filled balloon is warmed to room temperature
5:25 - A large, helium filled balloon is cooled until it no longer floats in air. Then it is warmed, and it slowly begins to rise.

i really enjoyed this experiment but i didnt understand difference between real and ideal gas 🤔🤔

Cool. There are examples. Now, I need video like this but in Filipino.

That was very enjoyable to watch, thanks

Thank you so much sir. Now I have clearly understood " compressibility factor."😀😃
Helium gas has low CF, that's why it won't shrink much. On the other hand, N2 has more CF than He, that's why at first CF rate of N2 will be higher than He.

Correct me if I am wrong

Do you not form some liquid oxygen in the first balloon when you drop it below its boiling temp? (Maybe only stays that way very briefly)

These intermolecular forces in air you talk about (2:23), are they:
- only between nitrogen and nitrogen, oxygen and oxygen?
- between oxygen and nitrogen?
- both of the above?

In other words would the same "supershrinking" occur for a balloon of pure oxygen or nitrogen?
Or does the fact that air is a composed gas make a gas behave non ideally?

Wow, that was awesome. I enjoyed that.

Whu are you torturing helium from the top 😂😂poor helium balloon

Great video. I would recommend to show that the first balloon, filled with air, has liquid in it when cooled down completely in liquid nitrogen. That's why it shrinks to practically zero volume.

I think the balloon with helium should fly because the density for helium is less than the air ..
when the man but the balloon with helium on the table why it doesn’t fly ???!
