Our Chicken Adventures: 10 Benefits of Sharing your High Tunnel Greenhouse with your Chicken Flock!
Показать описание
Today I wanted to show you how I am fertilizing my high tunnel greenhouse, getting it ready for the spring by sharing it with my backyard chickens. I have several PVC Coop designs, which were low cost and easy to build!
There are so many benefits for sharing it with your chickens for them!
By sharing our high tunnel with our chickens during our first winter in our new house, they are:
1) kept warmer on cold days, out of the wind, dry from rain and other elements.
2) They can roam and walk around even when the weather is not so nice out side the tunnel
3) You can grow grass and other plants for the chickens to peck and eat during the summer months into the winter months. I will segregate patches for them so that they can have a different patch at different times of the winter
4) I will be designing a way for them to go outside the tunnel and get fresh grass. I have a chicken run that is made out of PVC in my other house that can be used for them to roam around in safely
5) The eat all the bugs and other creepy crawlies
6) The are safer from large predators like cats, dogs, racoons and possums than when they get to roam around freely
7) They fertilize the floor by pooping and scratching around and turning the soil
8) When we give them kitchen scraps they eat what they want and the rest falls on the floor and is mixed into the soil
9) I have designed and built movable PVC chicken coops that are light and easy to move made out of PVC and tarp
10) I have made movable fencing, out of wood stakes and plastic mesh or hardware cloth that is easily moved.
11) I will divide the tunnel in two areas, and rotate the chickens from one area to the next in order to use the fertile soil that they have made for growing vegetables.
12) You can make different breed pens along the walls of the tunnel and the pens can be as large as you want them and keep your chickens separate by breed.
