Lyrics (Also included in the video):

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
They strung up a man
They say who murdered three
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Where dead man called out
For his love to flee
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Where I told you to run
So we'd both be free
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
[Original line:] Wear a necklace of rope
[Line modified for effect:] Wear a necklace of hope
Side by side with me
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Where I told you to run
So we'd both be free
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
They strung up a man
They say who murdered three
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree

Are you, are you
Coming to the tree?
Where dead man called out
For his love to flee
Strange things did happen here
No stranger would it be
If we met at midnight
In the hanging tree

If Giyuu dies, i can imagine this song being played.

As Giyuu is in Tajiro’s arms bleeding, he gets a flashback. Him and Sabito are sitting on a tree staring in to the full moon, Giyuu starts to sing this song, and Sabito listens.

As The Water Hashira is getting closer to death, the previous children who trained and died under Urokodaki, gather around Giyuu and Sabito, standing on the trees around them, singing along. And at his very last moments, using the little breath he has left, he sings the song him and his friend sang a long time ago.

When I hear this song I think of a young child full of glee and joy running through a meadow and finds a great big tree. The child is amazed by the magnificent tree and then sees an old man sitting under the tree gazing at the sky. The child asks for his name. But the stranger only smiles sadly and instead he points out weird shaped clouds in the sky. The child finds them funny and laughs with him.
The child the grows up, but comes visiting the tree many times, and every time the old, kind man is sitting under the tree.
The child then becomes an adult and has to move away from the tree.
But even though life was difficult and busy, the magnificent tree was never forgotten nor was the old man.

The child’s final day at lasts comes.
But with one last wish the old child now only wishes to visits the beautiful, childhood tree and the old man, before death comes.

Under the night sky and all the shining stars the tree stands as grand and tall as before, and in the shadow under the tree sits the old man. Still the same with his sad and kind smile.

The old man simply looks at the now old child and says:
“Are you ready to go now?”
The child smiles at him, and nods.
Then looks at the tree one last time before everything turned to shadow.

And so Death accompanied the child to a better place where the child could rest forever under a beautiful tree.

Have you ever noticed that in the book it’s “a necklace of rope” instead of “a necklace of hope”

I searched up the song, and the “wear a necklace of hope” was actually “wear a necklace of rope”

:0 the song just got a tad bit more darker—

You realize the singer of the song is the dead murderer. He's still in the hanging tree. And even though he told his lover to flee, he keeps asking if she's coming to meet him. The phrase "Where I told you to run, so we'd both be free" is the most troubling because at first you think he's talking about when he told her to flee, presumably to safety. But then you wonder if he meant for her to run to him. To death. In the final stanza, it's clear that that's what he's waiting for. His lover, with her rope necklace, hanging dead next to him in the tree.

That’s also someting I saw on an article about The Hanging Tree

This is like a lullaby, but one that kids don't realise has a dark meaning behind till they're older and go to sing it to their kids.

My 4 year old brother goes to sleep listening to this song a lot and it's to the point where I can't help but wonder why it's so eerily calming

I just love how most of these comments are about whatever Anime this character is from and not many people mention the fact that this is from the Hunger Games.

Speaking of which, I just read the trilogy this week...

For everyone commenting on "Necklace of HOPE" and how that's not the original lyric:

In canon there are two versions of this song. Katniss sings the original song with "a necklace of rope, " as in escape by death via hanging, but when the district is trying to encourage an uprising against the capital, the district leader is trying to prevent people from thinking through the consequences of rising up against a cruel dictator--death--so they change that single word in the song to avoid being too explicit about the fact that all of these revolutionaries are probably going to be slaughtered even if they succeed. :P
