Great to see two like minded vintage car lovers.

Auto instrument guy here, I'm in Australia so I haven't repaired too many Smiths instruments but what I remember of that vintage MG, the tachometer used an inductive pickup using high current running in the neg coil line to the points. When people change to electronic ignition, the pulse energy (current) isn't high enough to trigger the transistors on the circuit board. The only fix I've been able to apply to this is to replace the circuit board which will pick up a low energy pulse from the coil.
It would have been nice to explain what Steve did. As an instrument repairer of 40 some years, I'm an old dog who's not above learning new tricks but it was frustrating for Steve not to explain what he did.

Steve looks like the guy to go to for all these puzzling jobs. Will check his channel, thanks for the top tip. Bob

Does your MGB ever disengage the overdrive by itself ?

I'm not sure if I missed something and I'm not too bad with electrics but I don't think he actually explained what connections were changed and why?

As a rule, I try not to let a man with latex gloves get behind me.
