We used to consider a move like that "carrying" the basketball, and a loss of possession.
If an Offensive player is allowed to pick up the ball while dribbling and then continue his dribble, it gives him an extreme advantage over the Defensive player.
When you pick the ball up like that, you used to have to either shoot it or pass it. You could not continue dribbling. I really don't know what Basketball is becoming but it certainly has elements that I haven't seen in my many years of following the game. Really, I can barely watch that crap.
Don't even get me started on that Euro Step, lol.
