Показать описание
3 C's - Competence, Commitment and compatibility are the fulcrum around which any one builds his or her career. If you are at least good in all these three areas then there are high chances that bosses and clients will want to give you more challenging work and would want to help you grow in your career. In order to become better and better in these three areas you need to continuously watch yourself and mend the things that make you incompetent in any of the 3 Cs. So what are the things that one has to continuously watch and keep working on to improve them ? This book The Unspoken Rules by Gorick NG talks about those things. We should accept that Managers do work in strange manners at times. For a work he might have patted your back but in annual review he might have different opinion about it. Why does that happen ?
Managers expect the things to be done in a certain way but do not explain, these are the unspoken rules. The top performers, without realizing, always follow the unspoken rules. These rules aren’t taught in schools. Instead they are passed down from parents to child and from mentors to mentees. We generally think that getting ahead in life is all about hard work but actually hard work only gets you hired up for a job. To survive and thrive in a job you need something more, you need to know the rules of the game. Before we talk about something else let’s talk about three C’s that we have mentioned earlier. These three C’s are the framework around which all the unspoken rules and the secrets to live by them will be tested.
The minute you step into a new role is the minute your managers, coworkers, and clients will ask themselves three questions -
“Can you do the job well ?”
“Are you excited to be here ? ”
“Do you get along with us ?”
Your job is to convince your manager, coworkers, and clients to answer “Yes !” to all three questions. Prove that you are competent, and people will want to offer you more important responsibilities. Prove that you are committed, and people will want to invest in you. Prove that you are compatible, and people will want to work with you. Demonstrate all these three C’s and you will maximize your chances of building trust, unlocking opportunity, and getting closer to achieving your goal. Remember, you need all Three.
Commitment - Commitment means you are fully present and eager to help your team achieve its goals - but not so eager that you put others on the defensive.
Compatibility - Compatibility means you make others comfortable and eager to be around you - without coming across as inauthentic or trying too hard.
Competence - Competence means you an do your job fully , accurately, and promptly without needing to be micromanaged - and without making others look bad.
Now, It’s important to know that you need all these three Cs . Otherwise, People will not trust you with important assignments, will not feel you are worth their time and investment, or will not want to spend time with you. If you are Good in all the three Cs then only you will have the opportunity to get important work and career growth. If you lack any one of the three Cs you will struggle.
So, In order to improve these 3 Cs the author suggests around 20 such unspoken rules that you have to follow whether your manager tells you or not. And, the author talks about some secrets that will help you to keep on track in line with these rules.
The unspoken rules are like - keeping the big picture in mind, how to help others , save others time etc .
Overall, this is a nice book and I liked it. it will certainly benefit not only the people who are just starting their career but also to the experienced people and especially to those whose career is stuck at a particular level and do not know the next step.
