"Sony paid for the award" and I'm sure they also paid Doucet handsomely to *praise Nintendo on stage during his acceptance speech*

They cut out Sven’s speech in the video, but Sven’s speech should be heard across all companies. It’s VERY important not only for gaming, but the entertainment industry as a whole.

The craziest thing about Astro Bot winning GOTY is that it was a game that was announced and released within the same year. Absolutely incredible!

I like how they paid a tribute to Nintendo because they kept this game genre alive for so many years and inspired the idea to create Astro Bot. Congratulations to the team that worked on Astro Bot!

Team Asobi only has 65 employees with a game character that originated from a tech demo. This is an amazing accomplishment.

This could mark the return of the 3-D platform genre glory days.

90% of the Astro bot Haters didn't play the game.

The rral winners here are the players. Just look at the nominees, look what we got to play this year.
Congrats to Astro Bot, to me the closest game that came to perfection.

Astro Bot winning was so satisfying because the game reminds us of WHY we love gaming in the first place. It's a love letter to not just gaming in general but to both ongoing and forgotten franchises and could potentially revive interest in IP's LONG OVERDUE for a new instalment. But most of all, Astro Bot's victory SHOULD be a wake-up call on what the industry should be like going forward, enjoyment over profit, passion over greed and LOVE OVER MONEY.

This came full circle. Nintendo (while they did not create it) perfected the platformer genre. Nintendo brokers a deal with Sony to co-create the "Nintendo "Play Station" before reneging on the deal and going behind Sony's back to partner with Panasonic. Sony then creates their own stand-alone console, the Sony PlayStation and becomes Nintendo's biggest rival. 30 years later, Astro Bot wins GOTY, and while it celebrates 30 years of Sony history, a special nod goes out to Nintendo for popularizing a genre that inspired Astro Bot, a game that likely would never have been made had Nintendo not gone back on their deal to create Sony's industry defining consoles.
