Stannard Rock lighthouse is in Lake Superior. It’s a very common mistake that people believe it’s called Standard Rock lighthouse. It’s an extremely spooky place and is every bit as dangerous as the big ocean water during the autumn storms.

I am a Great Lakes lighthouse buff who owns several books on the subject and I actually do also have a copy of Barbara Smith's Ghost Stories of the Sea. I can confirm that Stannard Rock Lighthouse is an offshore Michigan light and the photo used in the book is wrong. Frederick Stonehouse's book Haunted Lakes II also includes a version of this story, albeit a much briefer and less detailed version, and he makes it clear that this event took place at Michigan's Stannard Rock Light. The history surrounding the 1961 explosion at that light is of course well documented. Minnesota has also never had a far offshore "crib" lighthouse that can only be reached by boat, like is present at Stannard Rock.

I suspect Smith may have confused Stannard Rock with Split Rock Lighthouse, a similarly named light that is in Minnesota near Duluth and has its own interesting ghost stories attached to it. It's still a little strange though that she would use a photo of yet a third lighthouse there, (Minnesota Point) especially as Split Rock Lighthouse, with its short but beautiful tower at the edge of a massive cliff, is one of the most iconic lighthouses on the Great Lakes.

This story, set in the 1990s, also could not possibly have taken place at Split Rock as that light was deactivated in 1969 and owned by the Minnesota Historical Society since 1976. There would be no reason for the Coast Guard to get involved with a restoration after those dates. It's also hardly isolated. According to the website Lighthouse Friends, Split Rock Lighthouse receives 116, 000 paying visitors every year, making it the most popular historic site in the state of Minnesota. There has never been a decent attempt to restore the Minnesota Point Light, which was deactivated in 1913 and has been on Lighthouse Digest's Doomsday List since the list was first published in 1993.

Amazing stories, especially the Weymouth one, a very unusual case. The odour, the evil look in the old lady's eyes and Kathleen wanting to walk back the same way. I live not a million miles from there and can hear seagulls over my house this minute. Thanks for your work, always love your stories.

I think the Weymouth seafront story is quite possibly the scariest ghost story I’ve heard.

I was so excited to receive a notification for a new video, only to be disappointed when it wasn't available. Glad to see it's finally out. This is one of my favourite channels so it's always a treat to see new content.

The idea of the sea terrifies me.. the idea that even though you are on a big ship you are still so tiny, vulnerable and alone in such an unforgiving place.

I spent about a year working on platform supply vessels, I sailed to the Ninians many times, had no idea about the ghost stories. Also the date of the mystery distress call in 1992 would've been my 2nd birthday 😮
