About the Artist
"My #morerainbows! series came out of a need to connect to wonder and hope in a dark and toxic time of isolation and despair! I needed more rainbows in my life and set about embroidering them onto vintage photographs with hand dyed silk. These discarded images, ephemeral things, caught from the light and shadow of the past convey the transience of life and carry with them the emotional charge of memory. The rainbows symbolize hope, inclusivity and a communication with spirit. They seem to offer a momentary window into the universe, and our place in it, to our sense of awe. I would sit by the air purifier and methodically, meditatively and lovingly pierce each dog eared photo with the finest of needles, pulling through the most lovely silk, stitch by careful stitch, each rainbow a reminder, a legacy, in gratitude for the past and a prayer for our future.
I love this old photograph from the Valley of Heart's delight, onto which I embroidered the benevolence of the rainbow "blessing" the orchard, manifesting in a rainbow of French knot plum blossoms. This longing for wonder, for a connection with our past and for better days runs deep in this time of climate crisis, global pandemic, civil injustice and political and economic breakdown."
