The UAW strike and expensive settlement could start a fire sale on US auto factories, too. Each costs way more to convert (if they are even convertible) than starting over -- in a 'right-to-work' location -- like Blue Oval City. There are possibly 100 locations that could be abandoned this decade. Dealerships are in a similar situation, especially if direct sales continue to grow.

Although there were rumors about BYD buying Fords German factory, that is not, confirmed and BYD has stated they are more interested in building their own factories in Europe than buying existing ones. Ford has announced the sale of this factory without naming the “investor”.

Retired auto worker here. Concerning the value of legacy assets. The nice thing about robots is it's easy to use them for a new purpose. It's easy to change the tooling on it's head. It's even easy to add vision systems. My old factory had a shop where old robots would go, get rebuilt and sent back out, most of the time to a different task.

For most people living in the West although we dislike the fact that China is not a democracy we recognize that China is one of the most important countries in the world and its economy and trade practices are important to almost everyone where ever you might live.
China is leading the world in EV development and is doing a service to mankind in developing this technology.
Although we give a lot of credit to Tesla it would not be in the same position it is today if China had not agreed to letting them start the Shanghai factory and provide it with a lot of the finance.
Although this comment is a bit of topic we should not be surprised at the way that local Chinese companies are displacing foreign brands and I would not be surprised in future for the Chinese car companies to eventually buy out their western partners.
Chinese car companies are likely to become dominant in all countries which dont have their own auto industry and gain a significant market share in the countries that do.

In the US, factories will start closing and traditional dealers are going to be going out of business. Gas cars are increasingly getting more and more expensive and for the wealthy, higher end business and long haul only. EVs are going to also be putting more and more smaller gas stations out of business. the fact is the car business in the USA is shrinking in sales numbers since 2015. This will continue and prices are going to be higher to maximize profits while the industry shrinks in employees and production.
