In this video I dispel some myths and common misunderstandings surrounding temperature and humidity in mycology. I also talk about how these two factors, in addition to FAE (Fresh Air Exchange) all play an important role in producing pins, and how they are all connected. Avoid the pitfalls and misinformation out there surrounding these topics, it is a lot simpler than some make it out to be.

I had some shoeboxes that I suspected were contaminated so I put them outside where they experienced lows of mid 40s fahrenheit overnight temperatures and after like two weeks harvested about an ounce dry from each. They were not contaminated but better safe than sorry. Haven't had a frost yet but any day now...

Congrats on the sponsorship! I used an ink bird humidity controller on an Oyster mushroom tent and the controller worked great!

Great explanation and thank you for explaining what humidity is necessary in the head space. I'm on my first grow and am starting to pin now. You may have just saved my grow. Thank you!

What’s the grass doing for the mushies? I don’t understand it!

Inkbirds are great I've used them for my reptiles. Congrats on another awesome sponsor 👏. Also I noticed when I switched from air conditioning to heat in the house a lot of my stuff had issues from the change in routine! Also love the look of the live casing layer!

First time doing dub tub. With PE. Put to fruiting conditions about 9 days ago, it seems that the bottom tub isn’t maintaining humidity? It doesn’t get the small water droplets on it. I mist the top tub maybe twice a day, but I don’t think I see any pins. Any insight please?

Hello Sage, I noticed you are answering questions on this vid so here is a comment and question. I’m new at this. So, in reading, I took the temp and humidity constraints to heart. My background is measurement and control so of course I decided to automate. Purchased a heat mat, reptile fogger and an Inkbird controller. The temps here are running cold this time of year and the house is run around 62, so thought I needed to heat things up a bit.

I purchased BRF jars and liquid injectables, and got the jars to colonize. After birthing I put them in the bin on a pearlite base and learned pretty quick that the fogger was way overkill, the inside was soaking, and that the Rh sensor/controller was not much use in this application. Thanks for explaining the distinction between humidity at the mycelium/air interface vs the atmospheric Rh. And that evaporation is key. Never heard that before.

Question: Once the cakes are birthed is it OK to just leave the lid ajar for FAE? My setup now is an aquarium air pump with a HEPA filter. That said, the inside of the bin is constantly covered in water droplets due to the colder outside temps. (I’m holding 70-74 in the bin).

Last Question: I have some cakes that appear identical to the others, which have pinned, fruited and been harvested, but these cakes don’t pin. They don’t show signs of contamination, appear fully colonized…. Can I induce pinning?

Great content. Thanks

What about using a humidifier inside a martha where the shoeboxes are? Idea is to increase relative humidity to keeo the sub from drying out too fast. First flush of pancyans shrunk my sub a 1/4" off the sides of the box.

@1:03 - I packed my CVG in Food Saver bags and dumped it in the sous vide (stick type in huge pot) and left the bags in there for about 90 minutes at 170f. So far, it's worked okay. I will report if it doesn't The CVG is already to field capacity prior to vac sealing.

How do you have grass growing in your tubs??

What grass seed are you using, and is that to help removed CO2?

First time grower and idk if it's luck, but my first two grow in a bag grows went amazing in the summer AZ closet. I just added some damp sponges in a closet setup and changed them once a month. Constant 78F and 80% humidity

Should I mist my mushies and substrate 3 times a day when I fan or is that why my apes are kinda slippery? 😂

Question. If I have a 3lb spawn bag and a 10cc spore syringe. How many cc's are actually necessary to inject into the bag?

Stupid question but do you put that device inside the tub or next to it? Your room and the inside of the tub are different temperatures and humidities aren’t they?🤔
