Tracking Hurricane Laura: Storm continues to strengthen, expected to become 'extremely dangerous' Ca

Hurricane Laura is forecast to strengthen into a major, Category 4 storm before making landfall late Wednesday or early Thursday along the Texas/Louisiana coastline, according to the National Hurricane Center.

In addition to the destructive wind threat, "potentially catastrophic damage" from storm surge is also possible from San Luis Pass, Texas, to the mouth of the Mississippi River.

In its 11 a.m. update, the National Hurricane Center said, "only hours remain to protect life and property."

As the storm continues churning over the central Gulf of Mexico, the ingredients -- including warm sea surface temperatures and low wind shear -- remain for the storm to rapidly intensify, forecasters said.
