Auntie Shrew is such a wonderful character. When she's first introduced she's painted as a nosy old gossip, but she actually acts as a sort of mother to everyone in the field and just wants to protect them. And I love how she acts here. She could have easily just left Mrs. Brisby, or rescued her and left the plow, but instead sha goes the full length and stops the plow before rescuing Brisby. And to top it all off, she didn't rub her nose in it. She could have nagged Brisby about what a horrible idea it was and how it didnt change anything. But she didnt--she scolded Brisby for crying and that was it. She dropped the issue and even said WE'LL think of something, refusing to allow Brisby to take everything on her shoulders. She's an incredibly well written character in a fairly minor role.

We took my Grandpa - a farmer - to see this movie. The man was tough, a former Marine tank commander and as unsentimental as they come, but this scene clearly affected him, seeing farming from the wildlife's perspective. He was very quiet on the way home.

you gotta give kudos to Auntie shrew for going after Brisby and actually managing to stop the plow

It's really interesting how they would switch between mouse-like movements and the more anthropomorphized bipedal ones for the characters animation, like when Mrs Brisby went up the rock to investigate the sounds of the tractor. Most movies seem to just pick one style and stick pretty rigidly to it, but in this movie we see both styles of character animation in play for the animal characters, and it's quite well done.

With luck, some young kid will see this clip out of curiosity and thus be introduced to the wonderful world of Don Bluth animation 😊

This movie is so beautifully animated and rotoscoped. I heard that the founder of the studio that made it was planning on starting an animation studio dedicated to teaching modern animators the old-fashioned way of the craft, which would be really neat.

One of my favorite parts of the soundtrack. Jerry Goldsmith did some of his very best work for this film.

I hear a lot of Igor Stravinsky influence in the score of this movie. It’s wonderful

I've been a fan of this movie since I was a little girl. It introduced me to the amazing animator, Don Bluth, and made me a fan of the great Jerry Goldsmith.

I must have seen this movie 500 times and I never noticed that the Brisby kids have a little tire swing in front of the house made of a metal washer on a string. Bless their hearts. 🥲🙏❤️

Auntie Shrew is the perfect example of a flawed character done right. She acts at first like the gossiping busy-body with a holier than thou attitude, but when it comes here it becomes obvious that is just her bravado, inside she really does care about not just Mrs Brisby but the children and all the animals in the field, even risking her life to save everyone.
That's how you write a character with layers.

Wow, for an old shrew who needs a cane to walk, can run just as quick to warn the other animals of the plow.

I never understood what was happening here as a kid. I always thought that the machine is a monster from another world.

I remember seeing this when I was a kid

When I was a kid, I thought Auntie Shrew was rude when she responded with Jonathan was not there, and scolded her for crying.

I understand as an adult she did not mean in her meanness about Jonathan not being there - she misses him too - I can hear her missing him in her voice.

And Mrs. Brisby crying made Auntie sad too, but she did tell Mrs. Brisby about the Great Owl, and knowing what to do.

This has got to be one of the scariest human scenes in movie history, all those poor little animals.;w;
