Nuclear Submarines Lifetime of Service #shorts

The “Columbia” Class SSBN currently under construction will have a Reactor that will never need refueling. But it doesn't matter if the boat runs on nuclear fuel or not.
The sea is more powerful than that reactor (or diesel-electric or AIP boat). The sea tries very, very hard to kill you beneath the waves. It succeeds sometimes.
But every time you dive, you put stress on the hull of the submarine. The Soviets liked to use titanium hulls to build the deep-diving submarines that they were, but then discovered that they were not as strong as expected - and could only dive to depth a certain number of times before they didn't resurface because they were brittle.
U.S. submarines also have a certain lifespan, though much longer. A submarine’s life is measured in number of dives. And it’s kept track of very carefully. About 30–40 years of normal operations is what they’re good for. They are retired before then because technology has surpassed them.

Lol yes partially true. Just FYI SSGNs are now over 40 years old and I haven’t heard of any plans to retire any of them before 2027. USS Ohio is approaching 44 years of service having been launched on April 7, 1979

Good video. I never heard we had a number of dives limit. Went to test depth a bunch on fast attacks. The long life reactor just means when it starts to reach their end of life, a couple years, it's flank speed starts to get slower and slower.
What's on paper seldom matches real world.

Why can vulnerable warships and submarines have nuclear power but our communities don't?

Served on USS DIXON AS-37
Repaired Diesel/Electric, Fast attack, Boomers and Trident Submarines. Was offered a shake down cruise post one of our nuc Submarine upgrades. I declined.

Some diesel boats had over 5000 dive/surface but most Nuke boats will not reach 500
