Live Day Trading: Losing $3,100 With Terrible Timing

I've been trading for over a decade and have never had this happen to me. It did happen and I blame no one but myself. Sure, it was really terrible timing, but I was the one who chose to trade "this type" of stock, so it is what it is. Plus, the loss should not have been this large, but greed got a hold of me and it cost me even more... as you'll see. Greed is a savage beast! $AAPL $SPY $TSLA $FB $UBER $LYFT $ACB $CRON $CGC $APHA

In a way this is a positive. To show new traders that everybody loses even the experienced and this is part of the game. Thanks for sharing your losses and wins unlike other so called “teachers” 🙏

DAMN!
This has got to be your best tutorial ever!
1. I had no idea that this could happen while Shorting Stocks.
2. You are by far the most even tempered man on the planet. I would have unleashed a stream of obscenities that would have filled the Universe if that happened to me.
Good job, Clay.

Of course hindsight is always 20-20 and I'm sorry that short cap made your scaling strategy impossible, but I'm wondering if it would've been a good idea to buy 1000 shares once you figured out what went wrong? I'm thinking that would've closed out your 500 short position for a loss, but more importantly put you 500 shares long in the direction of price to hopefully B/e. I noticed your moving average hadn't crossed, so maybe trend would've continued for this strategy to work out. Sorry for the late comment, as I'm sure you've probably moved on. But just wondering if I'm on the right track.

2:30-3:00 is the critical moment where you realize and then actually mention that you cannot execute your strategy. To all other traders out there, use this as a lesson. As soon as things are not going to plan and your strategy has fallen apart you must immediately cut losses (read: flatten your position) because now you are trading purely on emotion.

If Clay was any bit the trader he says he is I think he would agree that even if he made out with money on this trade it would have still been a bad day/ bad trade for not trading the system but instead relying on gut/emotions.

Thanks for posting nonetheless.

I just lost 1.5k USD in a single trade. I already cut the loss, but it is still indeed very painful as it was my first big loss. I would like to ask, when would you consider cutting a loss or holding it with hopes for it to come back and break you even?

Don’t know if it helps for the future but I saw in a lightspeed webinar last week that they now offer the ability to locate shares to short on hard to borrow stocks from within lightspeed without having to call anyone. I think you might have to initially call to set it up but after that you just open a window and punch in your ticker and the number of shares you want to locate, then it prompts you with whatever fee it will cost to short those shares as many times as you want that day.
