When an electrical impulse reaches the axon terminal (the end) of a neurone, a chemical called a neurotransmitter is released into the synapse.
A synapse is a gap between two neurones.
The neurotransmitter diffuses across the synapse from a high to low concentration.
When the neurotransmitter reaches the next neurone, a new electrical impulse is generated.
The electrical impulse then travels down the neurone away from the synapse.
