Six years after the founding of the World Council of Churches in Amsterdam, delegates gathered in Evanston in Greater Chicago in August 1954 for the WCC’s second assembly. It was the first and only time that a WCC assembly has taken place in the United States - a country gripped at that time by the fear of communism, rivalry with the Soviet Union, and witnessing the stirrings of a civil rights movement to confront the racial segregation that disfigured the face of society.
